Chapter 1 - White Shoes in a Forgotten Bag

I walked into my husband's private penthouse carrying a pair of baby shoes and our first ultrasound, only to catch the most feared mafia boss on the East Coast kissing his secretary while they laughed about how blindly I trusted him. Before the sun went down, I had abandoned my wedding ring, filed for divorce, and disappeared without telling him I was carrying his child. Eleven days later, when he finally discovered what had been inside that forgotten gift bag, the truth shattered everything he thought he controlled.
That Tuesday had started with more hope than I had felt in years.
I woke before dawn at our estate just outside New York City, my hand resting over the tiny life growing inside me. Three days earlier, my doctor had confirmed I was six weeks pregnant. I hadn't told my family. I hadn't even told Elena, our longtime housekeeper who had become like a sister to me.
Lorenzo deserved to hear it first.
It was our second wedding anniversary, and I convinced myself that seeing our baby's ultrasound would soften the ruthless man the rest of the world feared. Maybe, just for one moment, the crime boss everyone whispered about would become nothing more than a husband preparing to be a father.
I wore the blue dress he once said brought out my eyes and tucked the ultrasound beside a tiny pair of white baby shoes inside a gift bag. I even took a taxi into Manhattan so his security detail wouldn't ruin the surprise.
His private penthouse occupied the top floor of a building that didn't even carry a name on the front entrance. It was where he handled business I was never allowed to ask about.
The elevator doors slid open.
Then I heard her laugh.
Vanessa.
His executive assistant.
The sound drifted from his office—comfortable, playful, far too intimate.
When I reached the half-open doorway, I froze.
Lorenzo stood beside his desk with his tie loosened while Vanessa rested both hands against his chest. A heartbeat later, he kissed her without the slightest hesitation.
I couldn't breathe.
Then she smiled and asked, "Does your wife still believe you're the perfect husband?"
He chuckled.
"Isabella believes whatever I let her believe," he replied. "She keeps my public image clean, smiles for charity photos, and never asks questions she doesn't want answered."
"So she's just for appearances?"
"The perfect mafia wife," he said. "Loyal, obedient... and completely unaware."
The gift bag slipped from my fingers, but neither of them noticed.
I picked it up, walked back to the elevator, and wrapped one hand around my stomach as the doors closed.
My baby hadn't changed.
My future had.
I checked into a small downtown hotel using my maiden name. Only after placing the baby shoes on the bed did I finally let myself cry. I buried my face in a towel, refusing to make enough noise for anyone to hear.
Then I stopped grieving and started planning.
Months earlier, after Lorenzo had returned home one night with blood staining the cuff of his expensive shirt, I'd quietly built an escape plan. I kept my real estate license active, opened a private bank account in my own name, found a trusted divorce attorney, and carefully protected every dollar that legally belonged to me.
By lunchtime, my money was gone from our joint life.
By midafternoon, the divorce papers had been filed.
By evening, I had a one-way train ticket.
I returned to the estate only once to collect the last of my belongings.
Elena met me in the foyer, took one look at my face, and whispered, "What happened?"
Without saying a word, I placed the ultrasound photo into her trembling hands.

Before she could speak again, bright headlights swept across the front windows.
Lorenzo was home hours earlier than anyone expected.
