Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Montgomery

The following forty-eight hours dismantled three decades of corruption in the Lowcountry.

The press conference held on the steps of the Charleston County Courthouse drew national television networks. Julian Montgomery, standing beside the District Attorney, presented Eleanor’s authenticated diary, the Savannah clinic’s falsified medical registers, and the independent DNA analysis.

Victoria Montgomery was formally indicted on twenty-two felony counts, including conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, corporate embezzlement, and federal wire fraud. Bail was denied due to flight risk. Arthur Montgomery, completely broken, agreed to a full state plea bargain, admitting under oath that his sister had orchestrated Eleanor’s poisoning and the cover-up of baby Aurelia’s existence.

Meanwhile, the historic Montgomery mansion on Battery Point stood dark for the first time in a century.

Lucia walked through the grand double doors, accompanied only by Julian and Beatriz. The house was magnificent, filled with priceless antebellum antiques, marble hearths, and soaring ceilings, but it felt hollow, like a mausoleum waiting for life to return.

They walked up the curved staircase to the master suite on the east wing—Eleanor’s old quarters, which had been locked shut since 1997.

Julian produced the brass skeleton key found among his father’s seized possessions and turned the lock. The door swung open with a soft groan.

The room was frozen in time. A half-finished landscape watercolor rested on an easel by the window overlooking the harbor. On the dressing table sat crystal perfume bottles, untouched for nearly three decades.

Lucia walked slowly across the Persian rug, running her fingers over the mahogany vanity. Beside Eleanor’s silver-backed hairbrush lay a small, silver-framed photograph: Eleanor, radiant and glowing, cradling her swollen belly in a field of wild sea jasmine. She was wearing a simple cotton dress, her eyes brimming with love and anticipation.

Lucia picked up the frame, tears finally falling without fear or anger, only pure, untainted love.

"She knew you," Julian said softly, standing in the doorway with his hands in his pockets. "Even before you were born, she loved you more than her own life."

"She saved me," Lucia said, pressing the photograph against her heart. "And Clara raised me. I had two mothers who gave up everything so I could survive."

Beatriz stepped into the room, holding a thick leather folio. "The board of directors held an emergency meeting this morning, Lucia. With Arthur’s confession and the trust activated, you officially control fifty-one percent of the Montgomery Maritime shipping lines and real estate holdings. Julian retains twenty percent under his mother's lineage. The remaining shares are dispersed among private investors."

Lucia turned to Julian. The young man looked exhausted, his shoulders bowed by the weight of his family’s sins.

"What are you going to do, Julian?" Lucia asked gently.

Julian offered a tired, genuine smile. "I’m going to clean this company up. If you'll have me as your partner, Aurelia. We tear down the offshore fronts. We pay the wharf workers what they’re owed. And we make this city proud of the Montgomery name again."

Lucia walked over and took Julian’s hand, giving it a firm, sisterly squeeze. "My name is Lucia Aurelia Montgomery. And we start tomorrow."
