Chapter 7 - The Shadows of Pier 4

The storm broke over Charleston with terrifying fury. Sheets of rain lashed against the rusted corrugated metal of Pier 4, while the black waters of the harbor surged violently against the rotting pilings.

Lucia stepped through the warped wooden entrance of the warehouse, her trench coat soaked through. In her right hand, she carried the leather satchel with Eleanor’s diary and the certified DNA report. Tucked into her inner pocket was Beatriz’s small .38 snub-nose revolver.

"I’m here!" Lucia’s voice echoed into the cavernous darkness, competing with the roar of thunder. "Victoria! Arthur! Show your faces!"

From behind a row of rusted shipping containers, a halogen work light clicked on, blinding her.

Arthur Montgomery stood there, looking haggard, his dress shirt unbuttoned at the neck, clutching a heavy iron wrench. Bound to a chair beneath the light was Clara, bruised and half-unconscious, but breathing.

And stepping out from the shadows was Victoria, holding an umbrella in one hand and a silver automatic pistol in the other.

"Right on time, little Aurelia," Victoria sneered, walking toward her with predatory grace. "Drop the bag. Kick it across the floor."

Lucia set the satchel down and kicked it forward. It slid through the oily puddles, stopping at Victoria’s feet.

"Let Clara go," Lucia said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in her ears. "You have the papers. You have the diary. Clara knows nothing that isn't already in those files."

Victoria let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "Oh, darling, you really are as naive as Eleanor was. You think this was about papers? This was about closure. Once you and Clara vanish into the Atlantic tonight, Arthur and I will finally close the trust. An unfortunate boating accident. A tragic end to a delusional girl who thought she could blackmail our family."

"You killed Eleanor," Lucia said, stepping forward, drawing Victoria’s focus entirely away from the perimeter. "You poisoned her."

"Eleanor was weak!" Victoria spat, her composure cracking into venomous rage. "She wanted to give half the maritime profits to public parks and worker unions! She was going to bankrupt this family with her ridiculous morals! She had to be removed. And when Clara stole you, she signed your death warrant twenty-seven years late!"

"And what about me, Aunt Victoria?"

A voice rang out from the overhead catwalk.

Victoria froze. Arthur whipped around, his jaw dropping.

Julian stepped into the dim light of the upper scaffolding, holding a high-definition video camera connected to his smartphone. Above him, illuminated by a flash of lightning through the skylight, stood four armed tactical officers from the Charleston Police Department, accompanied by the County District Attorney.

"Every word you just said was broadcast directly to the precinct server and our corporate legal counsel," Julian said coldly from above. "Drop the weapon, Victoria."

Victoria’s eyes widened with pure madness. "You traitorous little bastard!" she screamed, raising her gun toward Julian.

*Bang!*

Lucia didn't hesitate. She drew Beatriz’s .38 from her coat and fired. The round struck the concrete an inch from Victoria’s designer heels, sending jagged stone fragments into her ankles. Victoria stumbled back with a shriek of pain, dropping her automatic weapon into the flooded drain.

"Police! Nobody move!"

The tactical team swarmed down the iron stairwells, their assault rifles trained directly on Arthur and Victoria. Arthur immediately dropped his wrench, collapsing to his knees with his hands raised, weeping uncontrollably.

"I’m sorry! I’m sorry!" Arthur sobbed into the wet concrete. "She made me do it! She planned all of it!"

Victoria, soaking in the rain that poured through the broken ceiling, clawed at the officers as they forced her wrists into steel handcuffs. Her pristine chignon was ruined, her face smeared with mascara and mud.

"You can't touch me!" she shrieked, thrashing against the restraints. "I am a Montgomery! This city belongs to me!"

Lucia ignored the screaming woman. She ran across the slick floor, dropping to her knees beside Clara, slicing through the heavy zip-ties with Beatriz’s shears.

"Mother," Lucia whispered, pulling the trembling older woman into her arms. "It’s over. You're safe. We’re safe."

Clara looked up through swollen eyes, touching Lucia’s cheek with a bruised, trembling hand. "You did it, baby. You brought Eleanor home."
