Chapter 9 - The Sealed Envelope

"She’s right about the emergency guardianship, Julian," Henry warned as we sat in his law office at four in the morning, the skyline of Chicago beginning to emerge from the black dawn outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"I signed those papers when I was half-dead from grief," I snarled, pacing the room like a caged animal. "Elena died in a burning car, Henry! I was in a psychiatric ward for three weeks! That doesn't give Eleanor the right to starve my daughter to death!"

"Legally, in Cook County, Eleanor has three judges who play bridge at her country club," Henry said quietly. "If she files an emergency petition claiming you kidnapped Maya from a private medical regimen, she can tie this up in family court for eighteen months. And while the court deliberates, Maya could be placed in state foster care."

"No," I slammed my fist onto the mahogany conference table. "She stays with me."

"Then we need something that bypasses family court entirely," Henry said. He reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a battered, antique brass key attached to a faded blue ribbon.

I stared at it. "Where did you get that?"

"Your father gave it to me five days before he died of his 'sudden' heart attack," Henry replied, lowering his voice until it was almost a whisper. "He told me that Eleanor was becoming unhinged. He knew about her debts. He knew she had mortgaged properties she didn't own."

"What does this key open?"

"A private safe deposit box at the old Continental Bank vault on LaSalle Street," Henry said. "Your father told me that if Eleanor ever threatened the family bloodline—if she ever weaponized her position—I was to give this key to you. Not to Bradley. To you."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Why didn't you give it to me three years ago?"

"Because your father’s instructions were explicit: only when Eleanor strikes at the heart of the next generation," Henry said grimly. "He knew what she was capable of, Julian. Better than anyone."
