Chapter 4 - The Price of Vanity

My mother didn't blink. That was her greatest weapon: an absolute, psychopathic refusal to accept fault in public.
"How dare you interrogate me in front of my guests?" she hissed, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "I have sacrificed my twilight years raising your broken child while you played venture capitalist in London. If she’s neglected, it’s because she is unmanageable!"
"She's eight years old!" I roared. The sound shattered the polite facade of the ballroom. A few waiters backed away against the gilded walls; several guests began reaching for their coats.
"Security," Eleanor called out, waving toward the grand entrance where four burly men in black blazers stood at attention. "My son has clearly had an episode. Escort him and the child to the suite. Now."
Before the guards could take two steps, a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped between them and me. It was Henry Vance, my late father's corporate attorney and the trustee of my family's remaining trusts.
"Stand down," Henry commanded the guards. His eyes were fixed on Maya’s gaunt, sunken cheeks. He looked at Eleanor with a disgust so potent it made her step back. "Eleanor, if a single hand touches Julian or this girl tonight, I will personally file an emergency child welfare injunction before the sun comes up. And I will make sure the Cook County State's Attorney reads the financial ledgers first."
Eleanor’s lips pulled into a thin, bloodless line. "Henry, this is a family matter."
"No," Henry replied, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "This is a crime scene."
I didn't wait to hear another word. Holding Maya tighter against my chest, shielding her eyes from the flashes of smartphone cameras already being aimed at us by ruthless guests, I turned toward the heavy brass doors of the Drake.
"Daddy," Maya whimpered, her tiny hand gripping my lapel with desperate strength. "Are you going to leave me again? The dark closet... she said if I ruined her party, she’d put me back in the dark closet."
May you like
Those words hit me like a physical blow. The air rushed out of my lungs.
"Never," I vowed, my tears soaking into her tangled hair. "Nobody is ever locking you up again, Maya. Daddy is home."
