Chapter 6 - The Velvet Trap

Friday night arrived. The Uptown Charlotte Grand Ballroom glittered with chandeliers, black-tie developers, bankers, and city council officials.

Natalie wore an emerald satin backless gown, looking radiant and utterly confident. Grant Holloway stood beside her in a bespoke tuxedo, holding a flute of champagne, basking in his self-proclaimed triumph as the developer of the year.

I stood beside Natalie, wearing my tailored charcoal suit, calm and completely still.

“Ethan, thank you for coming around on the terminal lease,” Grant said, offering me that same condescending grin. “Your company’s backing makes this project bulletproof. Natalie tells me you’re authorizing the final private equity transfer tonight too.”

“Everything is ready, Grant,” I said, keeping my voice mild. “In fact, Marcus Vance is arriving with the signed paperwork right now.”

Natalie squeezed my forearm, beaming. She thought she had won everything: the wealthy lover, the stolen capital, the suburban safety net.

Then Marcus Vance walked onto the raised presentation platform, flanked not by corporate brokers, but by two uniformed county deputies and Claire Sterling holding a thick leather dossier.

The microphone hummed. The room fell silent.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Marcus announced, his voice booming across the grand ballroom. “Before the zoning commission accepts the development tender for the Charlotte North Hub, Continental Freight Logistics has a formal declaration. Effective immediately, our letter of intent with Grant Holloway’s Vantage Crest Partners is revoked for cause—specifically, corporate espionage, unauthorized trade theft, and fraudulent capital solicitation.”

A collective gasp swept through the room.

Grant froze, his smile turning to ash. Natalie’s hand slipped off my arm as if scorched by fire.
