Chapter 2 - The Balance Sheet

By 2:00 a.m., I was sitting at the kitchen table of our brick house, laptop open, illuminated only by the glow of the screen.
When trust vanishes, clarity takes over.
I opened our joint accounts, personal records, and tax filings from the past three years. Natalie had been asking for larger sums over the last six months for "gallery acquisitions" and "curation prepayments." Because I loved her and trusted her implicitly, I had wired the funds without demanding line items.
Now I followed every single transaction.
The money hadn’t gone to European art dealers. It had been funneled through a boutique LLC called Vantage Crest Partners. A quick business registry search confirmed my suspicion: the registered managing agent of Vantage Crest was Grant Holloway.
They hadn't just been sleeping together. Grant was siphoning our life savings into his speculative commercial property investments, using Natalie’s access to my hard-earned logistics capital as his private line of credit.
Worse, I found a draft email in our shared cloud drive. Natalie had uploaded internal data sheets from my employer, Continental Freight Logistics. Grant’s real estate syndicate was planning a massive distribution hub north of Charlotte, and he had been using my confidential corporate freight contracts to underbid competitors and secure city zoning grants.
They weren't just destroying our marriage. If that leak went public under my name, it would destroy my career, my reputation, and possibly land me in federal court for corporate espionage.
I sat in the quiet dark for a long time, listening to the ticking wall clock.
"You hear things people don't say," she had once told me.

Now I saw what she was doing. And I was going to finish it.
