Chapter 9 - The Press Ambush

By 7:30 AM, the lobby of Whitmore Tower was swarming with reporters.
Rumors of the late-night boardroom clash and the vacuum left by Howard Whitmore’s death had leaked to the financial press. *The Wall Street Journal*, *Bloomberg*, *CNBC*, and the *Financial Times* had their top correspondents camped by the security turnstiles, waiting for any sign of executive movement.
At 7:45 AM, a black Mercedes Maybach pulled up to the curb.
Grant Sterling stepped out, looking immaculate in a charcoal Brioni three-piece suit. He looked refreshed, confident, and utterly untroubled. Beside him was Eleanor, dressed in severe black lace, playing the role of the grieving, wronged matriarch to perfection.
Grant didn't try to enter the building. Instead, he stopped right in front of the bank of television cameras and microphones.
"Good morning, everyone," Grant said, raising a hand with practiced charisma. "I know there are many questions regarding the unfortunate events following Howard Whitmore’s tragic passing yesterday."
"Mr. Sterling!" shouted a CNBC correspondent. "Is it true that Claire Whitmore has seized operational control and locked out the board?"
"Claire is a brilliant young woman, but she is under immense emotional strain," Grant said, his tone dripping with fake sorrow and paternal concern. "Grief affects people in unpredictable ways. Yesterday, Claire made unilateral threats to dismantle Whitmore Global’s core software infrastructure unless she was granted absolute authority over the family estate."
Eleanor stepped into the mic, wiping an imaginary tear with a lace handkerchief. "My daughter has cut me off completely. She has locked me out of my childhood home. I am deeply concerned that she is being manipulated by bad actors, or that her mental health has deteriorated to the point where she poses a danger to the shareholders of this company."
"Is that why Sterling Capital filed an emergency petition with the SEC this morning?" another reporter yelled.
"Yes," Grant declared boldly, looking straight into the main television lens. "We have reason to believe that millions of dollars have been illicitly routed out of Whitmore Global’s treasury over the last forty-eight hours to offshore accounts under Claire’s personal control. We are calling for an immediate halt to trading on Whitmore stock until an independent forensic audit can be completed."
The press pool erupted into a frenzy of shouted questions and flashing camera bulbs.
Grant smiled internally, adjusting his cuffs. He had delivered the fatal blow on live television. By the time the markets opened in forty-five minutes, panic would trigger a massive sell-off, his short positions would print hundreds of millions, and Claire would be answering questions from federal prosecutors.
Then, the heavy revolving glass doors of Whitmore Tower spun open.
