Chapter 10 - Counterstrike

The reporters turned instantly, cameras whipping around to capture my descent down the wide stone steps.

Grant’s smile froze. His eyes flicked to the two men in dark windbreakers with yellow FBI lettering on the back. A bead of sweat appeared at his hairline.

"Claire!" shouted a reporter from Reuters. "How do you respond to allegations of corporate embezzlement and mental instability?"

I walked straight past the microphones, stopping five feet from Grant and Eleanor. I looked into the sea of cameras.

"Good morning," I said, my voice cutting through the morning traffic noise like a knife through silk. "Thirty minutes ago, the Securities and Exchange Commission, acting on emergency evidence submitted by Whitmore Global Holdings, issued a permanent freeze on all trading accounts affiliated with Sterling Capital and its offshore subsidiaries."

The press corps went instantly silent.

Grant’s face turned gray. "You’re lying. That’s market manipulation—"

"I’m holding the federal indictment, Grant," Samuel said, stepping forward and holding up a blue-backed legal document. "Signed by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Indictment on fourteen counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate sabotage."

"What?" Eleanor gasped, turning to Grant. "Grant, what are they talking about?"

"Let’s talk about the offshore accounts, shall we?" I addressed the cameras. "Last night, an internal saboteur attempted to inject forged transaction records into Whitmore Global's financial core. That saboteur confessed at 3:00 AM. He provided the direct encryption keys linking the script to Grant Sterling’s personal laptop."

I turned to look Eleanor dead in the eye.

"And let's talk about the thirty million dollars Grant lost in Macau, Eleanor. The money he took from your personal trust fund. The money he used to purchase put options on Whitmore stock through an unlicensed broker in London."

"No..." Eleanor whispered, backing away from Grant as if he had caught fire. "Grant, tell her she’s lying! You told me that money went into a diversified municipal bond portfolio!"

"Shut up, Eleanor!" Grant snapped viciously, dropping all pretense of gentility. His mask had completely shattered.

"Special Agent Miller," Samuel said, gesturing to the lead FBI officer. "Mr. Sterling is all yours."

The two agents moved with practiced efficiency. Within five seconds, Grant Sterling was pinned against the hood of his Maybach, his arms pulled behind his back, the sharp metallic click of handcuffs echoing across the plaza.

"This isn't over, Claire!" Grant snarled, his face pressed against the cold black steel of the car. "You think you can run this company? You don't know who’s backing me! You have no idea what’s coming for you!"

"I don't need to know who's backing you, Grant," I said quietly, watching him being shoved into the back of an unmarked Crown Victoria. "Because whatever they gave you, it wasn't enough to buy me."

Eleanor collapsed onto the marble steps, weeping hysterically, her hands clutching her designer skirt. The press cameras captured every second of her disgrace.

I looked down at her for a long moment. There was no joy in my victory. No triumphant rush of adrenaline. Only the heavy, cold weight of a legacy I now had to carry entirely on my own.

I turned back to the building entrance. The opening bell was five minutes away.
