Chapter 8 - THE EMPIRE REBUILT

Two years later, the ashes of my old estate had been completely transformed.
Instead of rebuilding the glass-and-steel studio in the exact same spot, I turned the fire site into a tranquil memorial garden surrounded by towering Japanese maples and reflecting pools—a quiet reminder of what had been lost, and what had been overcome.
My company, Carter Design, had not only survived the tragedy; it had thrived beyond my wildest projections. We had just completed the floral and structural design for an international summit in New York, and our client roster now included international royalty and Fortune 100 CEOs.
I stood on the marble terrace of my restored mansion, holding a cup of steaming black coffee, watching the morning sun break over the east lawn.
My phone buzzed on the patio table.
It was an email notification from my financial officer. Our Q3 revenue report had just cleared, marking a 140% increase year-over-year.
A quiet, peaceful smile touched my lips.
My parents had moved to a small, rundown apartment across town after losing their home to foreclosure and legal fees following their failed cover-up attempts. They had tried to reach out twice through third parties, begging for financial assistance, but I had permanently blocked their numbers, their emails, and their existence from my life.
Fallon was currently serving her sentence in a medium-security correctional facility outside Raleigh, where she worked in the prison laundry room—earning forty cents an hour.
They had all tried to burn me down. They had thought the flames would erase my name, my success, and my spirit, leaving me with nothing.
They were wrong.
The fire didn't destroy me. It burned away every single toxic tie, every ounce of family obligation, and every illusion of codependency that had held me back for thirty-four years.

From the ash, I hadn't just rebuilt my life.
I had built an empire.
