Chapter 5 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE EMPIRE

The metallic click of the handcuffs snapping around my mother’s wrists sounded like a final gavel slamming down on a thirty-year illusion.
"Get your hands off me!" Margaret screamed, twisting her body as Agent Miller led her toward the exit. "Do you know who I am?! I am the widow of General Daniel Carter! You can't do this to me!"
"The widow of General Carter shouldn't have stolen from his military trust, ma'am," Agent Miller replied dryly, guiding her through the doors. "Watch your head."
Behind her, another agent approached Chloe.
"Please!" Chloe wept, dropping to her knees on the polished parquet floor, her silk dress spreading out around her like a broken flower. "Please, Nat! Tell them not to take me! I'll pay it back! I'll sell the condo! I'll give back the bags! Just don't let them lock me up!"
I looked down at my younger sister. For years, I had covered her debts, smoothed over her mistakes, and taken the blame for her failures because I thought I was protecting her. I had thought I was being a good older sister.
I realized now that I hadn't been protecting her at all. I had been enabling her destruction.
I knelt down in front of Chloe, meeting her tear-filled eyes.
"The FBI will recover the condo and the assets, Chloe," I said gently, wiping a tear from her cheek. "You're going to have to face the court. But if you tell the prosecutor the absolute truth about how Mom manipulated the documents, your lawyer might be able to get you probation."
"Are... are you going to help me?" Chloe asked, her voice small and helpless.
"I am helping you, Chloe," I said softly, standing back up. "By letting you finally grow up."
The female agent helped Chloe to her feet, placing her under arrest without handcuffs out of courtesy, and guided her slowly out of the ballroom.
The heavy doors swung shut behind them, leaving the grand room silent once again.
The crystal chandeliers still glittered overhead. The white roses still sat on the pristine tables. But the suffocating weight of my mother's emotional tyranny—a weight I had carried since I was a little girl—was suddenly, completely gone.
I stood in the center of the vast room, my heart pounding, my chest rising and falling as I took a deep, clean breath.
Ethan walked up behind me. He didn't say anything. He simply placed his heavy, warm hand on the small of my back, offering a steady, unshakeable support that grounded me.
"Are you okay, Captain?" he asked quietly.
I turned around, looking at the man I had chosen to spend my life with. The man who knew every secret I kept, every scar I bore, and who had stood beside me without hesitation when the storm broke.
"I’m okay, Colonel," I said, a faint, genuine smile touching my lips. "In fact... I think I'm better than okay."
Major Vance walked over, holding his tablet, though his expression was unusually serious.
"Sir, Captain," Vance said, bowing his head slightly. "I apologize for interrupting, but we have a secondary issue from the intelligence dossier."
Ethan frowned. "What kind of issue?"
"The $150,000 that was wired to the Cayman Islands from Daniel's compromised account," Vance explained, tapping his screen. "It wasn't spent on luxury goods or real estate."
I blinked, my smile fading. "What do you mean? Where did the money go?"
Vance raised his eyes, looking directly into mine.
"The Cayman account doesn't belong to your mother or Chloe, Captain," Vance revealed softly. "It belongs to a private defense contractor registered in Virginia... an entity called 'Valence Security Group.'"
Ethan’s body instantly went rigid. "Valence Security? That's the private military company that provided local logistics for Daniel's final deployment in Syria."
"Yes, sir," Vance nodded grimly. "And according to these bank routing codes... the $150,000 was wired to Valence Security three days before General Carter’s position was compromised overseas."
My blood ran cold. The air in my lungs turned to ice.
May you like
My father hadn't just been betrayed by his family for money.
His position had been sold.
