Chapter 1 - THE SECOND SLAP AND THE UNIFORM

My mother’s hand didn't just strike my cheek; it shattered the quiet elegance of the Ashford Hotel ballroom.
SLAP.
The sound echoed off the high plaster ceilings and crystal chandeliers like a gunshot. The string quartet’s violins squeaked to an awkward halt. Conversations evaporated into thin air. Waiters holding silver trays of champagne frozen in mid-stride.
My head jerked to the side. The skin on my left cheek felt as if a branding iron had been pressed against it, hot and throbbing.
"You selfish, ungrateful bitch!" Margaret Carter’s voice was no longer the controlled, aristocratic purr she used for church luncheons and charity galas. It was a razor-sharp shriek. "Your sister is drowning in debt because of your father's negligence, and you're sitting on hundreds of thousands of dollars like a dragon on a hoard!"
I stood my ground, my posture automatically stiffening into the attention stance I had practiced for nearly a decade. I didn't reach up to touch my face. I didn't blink. I locked my eyes onto my mother’s flushed, furious face.
"That account was designated to me by Dad, Mom," I said, keeping my tone under military control—low, flat, and absolute. "And Chloe’s debt isn't Dad's fault. It’s hers."
SLAP.
The second blow came faster, landing on the same cheek with brutal force. My ring slipped slightly against my skin as my head snapped back again.
"Don't you dare speak his name!" Margaret snarled, stepping closer, her expensive Chanel perfume mixing sickeningly with the smell of spilled prosecco. "Your father was a coward who spent his life hiding behind his ribbons while leaving his real family with nothing! You are marrying a rich man! You don't need Daniel’s blood money! Give Chloe the access codes tonight, or I swear to God I will publicly ruin every lie you’ve built about your precious little government career!"
She thought she had me. She looked around the room, her chin raised, expecting the crowd of two hundred guests to look at me with pity or disgust. She thought the social pressure of a grand ballroom filled with wealthy civilian guests would crush my resolve.
She was wrong.
Because while Margaret was breathing heavily, waiting for me to cry or apologize, a heavy set of footsteps began moving across the parquet floor.
It wasn't a casual walk. It was the rhythmic, iron-shod cadence of military parade boots.
Ethan Price didn't run. He walked with the terrifying, effortless speed of a predator. He wore a crisp, tailored black tuxedo, but the way his six-foot-three frame moved made it instantly clear that the suit was merely a civilian wrapper over lethal military training.
Behind him, four men sitting at table six stood up simultaneously. They didn't look at their wives or their drinks. They unbuttoned their suit jackets, revealing small, golden eagle lapel pins and concealed tactical communications earpieces.
"Step away from her, Margaret," Ethan said.
His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It possessed the command authority that had directed brigade-level tactical operations in hostile zones.
Margaret turned, her eyes flashing with contempt. "Stay out of this, Ethan! This is a family matter! You don't know what my husband left behind—"
"I know exactly what General Daniel Carter left behind," Ethan interrupted, stepping directly between my mother and me. He didn't look at Margaret. He looked at me, his sharp blue eyes searching my face, inspecting the red welt rising on my cheekbone.
His jaw flexed, a small muscle twitching near his ear.
"Are you hurt, Captain?" Ethan asked softly.
The entire room seemed to hold its breath.
Margaret frowned, looking bewildered. "Captain? What the hell are you talking about? She's an administrative assistant at the Department of Agriculture!"
Ethan slowly pulled a polished silver leather wallet from his interior jacket pocket. He flipped it open, revealing a heavy brass Department of Defense credential badge alongside an active-duty military identification card.
COLONEL ETHAN V. PRICE COMMANDER, 75TH SPECIAL OPERATIONS FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE BRIGADE UNITED STATES ARMY
Margaret stared at the gold crest, her mouth opening slightly, but no sound came out.
"My name is Colonel Ethan Price," Ethan announced, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the silent ballroom. "And the woman you just physically assaulted twice is not a civilian secretary. She is Captain Natalie Carter, Executive Intelligence Officer for Special Operations Command."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
Across the room, Chloe’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor.
