Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

Two days after the incident at the courthouse, Richard Vance called my father and me into his law office for an urgent meeting.

"We ran a full forensic audit on Elaine Mercer’s personal banking records," Vance said, sliding a thick blue folder across his desk. "And we discovered something that changes the scope of this case entirely."

Dad leaned forward. "What did you find, Richard?"

"Corbin wasn't acting alone in the embezzlement scheme," Vance revealed, tapping a specific bank ledger. "In fact, Corbin wasn't even the primary strategist. Elaine Mercer was."

I stared at the lawyer in shock. "Elaine?"

"Eighteen months ago, Elaine’s personal real estate business in Florida collapsed due to bad investments," Vance explained. "She was facing nearly two million dollars in debt and potential bankruptcy. She realized Corbin had access to Mercer Logistics' liquid reserves. Elaine convinced Corbin to set up Apex Strategy Holdings, brought Alyssa into the picture to act as the shell owner, and funnelled over $500,000 out of Corbin’s company over a period of a year and a half."

"She used her own son," I whispered, the sheer cruelty of it breathtaking.

"She didn't just use him," Vance continued. "She orchestrated the entire events of Christmas Eve. Elaine knew our trust deed existed because she found a copy in Corbin’s home office files six months ago. She knew that if Corbin initiated a standard divorce, your father would execute the trust clause and seize the house. So Elaine tried to stage a psychological breakdown."

"A psychological breakdown?" Dad asked, his eyes narrowing.

"Her plan was to throw Hannah out into the storm, isolate her, and file an emergency petition the next morning claiming Hannah had abandoned her child in a severe mental health crisis," Vance said coldly. "If Elaine had successfully declared Hannah unfit, she would have secured emergency custody of Wren, taken control of the trust assets through a family court order, and used the house title to pay off her Florida debt."

A wave of nausea washed over me.

Elaine hadn't just kicked me out because she was arrogant or cruel. She had intentionally forced me into a life-threatening storm with a baby, hoping I would panic, freeze, or make a desperate mistake so she could frame me as an unstable mother.

Dad stood up slowly from his leather chair. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. The retired Colonel didn't raise his voice, but the terrifying quietness that settled over him made even Richard Vance sit up straight.

"She tried to destroy my daughter and take my granddaughter," Dad said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

"The evidence is ironclad, Colonel," Vance said quickly. "We have the emails between Elaine and Alyssa detailing the plan. We turned everything over to the FBI financial crimes unit an hour ago. Elaine Mercer isn't just looking at civil lawsuits anymore. She is facing federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and child endangerment charges."

Dad looked at me, his expression softening as he walked over and placed a heavy, reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"It’s over, Hannah," Dad whispered. "They tried to set a trap for you, but they walked straight into mine."
