Chapter 9 - The Gala of Wolves

The Plaza Hotel Grand Ballroom was bathed in crystal light and golden opulence. Over five hundred of New York’s most powerful figures—senators, foreign ambassadors, shipping magnates, and Wall Street titans—filled the room, sipping vintage champagne and whispering feverishly about the scandal that had dominated the morning news.
Rumors had run rampant all afternoon. Some claimed Mara Vance had fled the country; others whispered that Vincent Bellini had seized Vance Maritime by force.
Then, the towering double doors of the ballroom swung wide.
The room fell instantly silent. The orchestra ceased playing mid-crescendo.
Mara Vance walked into the room.
She was magnificent. She wore an emerald-green silk velvet gown that swept the floor, custom-fitted to accent every curve of her slender silhouette. Around her neck was her grandfather Arthur’s priceless emerald pendant, restored to its rightful place. Her dark hair cascaded over one bare shoulder, and though the faint shadow of a bruise remained near her jawline, she wore it not as an injury, but as a battle scar.
And beside her, holding her hand with quiet, sovereign authority, was Vincent Bellini.
He was dressed in a tailored midnight-black tuxedo, his signet ring gleaming under the crystal chandeliers. His presence commanded the entire room; men who managed billions of dollars stepped aside, clearing a wide path for them as if royalty had entered a peasant village.
Cal and four armed security operatives walked two paces behind them, their cold eyes scanning the balconies and perimeter.
"Breathe, Mrs. Bellini," Vincent murmured softly, his thumb brushing over the back of her hand. "They are looking at you because they are terrified of what you represent."
"What do I represent?" Mara asked, keeping her chin up, meeting the gazes of the board members who had once ignored her pleas.
"You represent the end of their games," Vincent said. "And the beginning of mine."
Mara stepped onto the raised marble dais at the center of the ballroom. A microphone waited for her.
As she took her place, a murmur broke out near the service entrance. Evelyn Vance entered the ballroom, escorted by private security guards who had allowed her entrance only because she held an honorary ticket. She looked haggard despite her designer dress, her eyes burning with desperation and venom as she glared at her daughter on the stage.
Mara tapped the microphone. The sound resonated through the grand hall like a gavel strike.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Mara began, her voice ringing clear, powerful, and utterly devoid of fear. "Three weeks ago, Arthur Vance passed away. Certain people in this room believed his death was an invitation to pick apart Vance Maritime like vultures over a carcass. Some even believed they could use violence behind closed doors to silence the truth."
She looked directly at Evelyn, whose lips were trembling with suppressed rage.
"Tonight, I stand before you not as a victim, but as the sole Chairman and majority shareholder of Vance Maritime," Mara proclaimed, holding up a certified leather binder. "And as of this morning, Vance Maritime has merged all transatlantic logistics with Bellini Holdings. Any contract signed under coercion or fraud by Grant Sterling is null and void. Anyone who supported his extortion will find their business with our docks permanently terminated by midnight."
The ballroom erupted into a frenzy of murmurs and frantic phone checking. Several board members turned pale, immediately backing away from Evelyn as if she carried a plague.
Evelyn screamed from the crowd, "She’s a fraud! She married a mafia murderer to steal my rights! Security, remove her!"
Before security could take a single step, Vincent walked to the microphone beside Mara. He leaned into the mic, his deep voice slicing through Evelyn's hysterics like a razor through silk.
"Three words, Evelyn," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
The entire ballroom held its breath.
Vincent’s ice-blue eyes fixed on Evelyn Vance with absolute finality.
