Chapter 10 - Retribution

Vincent's three words acted as the cue.

The heavy side doors opened, and four senior investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by the New York State Attorney General, strode into the ballroom.

"Evelyn Vance?" the lead agent announced, displaying a gold badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and grand larceny. Officers, take her into custody."

A collective gasp swept through the high-society crowd. Evelyn shrieked, backing away into a champagne pyramid, sending crystal glasses crashing to the floor in a shower of glittering shards and golden liquid.

"Get away from me!" Evelyn screamed, flailing wildly as handcuffs were slapped onto her wrists. "Mara! Tell them! I am your mother! You can't let them take me to prison! Mara!"

Mara looked down at her mother from the dais. There was no joy in her eyes, only the deep, solemn peace of justice finally delivered.

"You stopped being my mother the moment you asked Grant to break my ribs," Mara said quietly into the microphone.

Evelyn was dragged across the shattered glass, kicking and sobbing, while photographers' flashes captured every second of her public humiliation. The society ladies who had once laughed with Evelyn turned their backs, disgusted, shielding their faces from the cameras.

Mara turned to Vincent. The room was spinning with adrenaline, triumph, and relief. For the first time in years, the crushing weight on her shoulders was gone.

"Thank you," she whispered to him.

Vincent looked down at her, his stern, dangerous features softening with an emotion that was raw and genuine. He reached out, his fingers gently tracing her jaw, ignoring the five hundred pairs of eyes watching them.

"You don't thank a partner, Mara," he murmured. "You rule with them."

He leaned down and kissed her.

It was not a theatrical kiss for the cameras; it was possessive, deep, and electric, sealing a bond forged in blood and validated in public victory. The ballroom erupted into polite, stunned applause as the elite quickly scrambled to align themselves with the new undisputed king and queen of New York shipping.

For a few fleeting moments, Mara felt completely safe in Vincent's arms. She felt victorious.

She had no idea that the real war had just begun.
