Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM ON THE 80TH FLOOR

Monday morning arrived with crisp, brilliant sunlight blinding the glass towers of downtown Chicago.
At 8:45 AM, a fleet of three black Ellison Capital town cars pulled up to the grand entrance of Vale Meridian Tower—the tallest, most imposing skyscraper on Wacker Drive.
Grant Ellison stepped out onto the marble plaza wearing a $10,000 bespoke Tom Ford suit, his shoes polished to a mirror shine, his hair perfectly styled. Beside him walked Blair Whitmore, wearing a sharp ivory power suit, clutching a leather briefing case containing their final pitch presentation. Following them were Arthur Sterling and four senior corporate associates.
Grant checked his reflection in the glass doors, adjusting his silk tie.
"Remember," Grant whispered to Blair as they entered the grand brass elevator. "Confidence is everything. When we step into that room, we act like Vale Meridian needs us more than we need them."
"They do need us," Blair smiled, applying a fresh layer of lip gloss. "Without Ellison Capital's restructuring management, their secondary industrial sector stagnates."
The private executive elevator shot upward silently, stopping at the eightieth floor.
The doors slid open to reveal a sprawling, marble-lined reception lobby overlooking Lake Michigan. Two security officers in tailored dark blazers bowed respectfully, escorting Grant's team down a quiet, carpeted hallway lined with priceless oil paintings.
They reached the grand double doors of the primary boardroom—a massive room featuring a forty-foot mahogany table surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the entire city.
Sitting around the table were all twelve senior executive directors of Vale Meridian, dressed in formal corporate attire.
At the head of the table sat Daniel Mercer, looking relaxed, holding a leather folder.
Grant walked into the room with a commanding, triumphant smile, extending his hand toward the directors.
"Good morning, gentlemen, ladies," Grant announced loudly, his voice filled with practiced executive charisma. "I am Grant Ellison, CEO of Ellison Capital. On behalf of my team, we are thrilled to finalize this historic partnership between our institutions."
None of the twelve directors stood up. None of them smiled. They stared at Grant with cold, stone-faced silence.
Grant's hand hovered in the air for two awkward seconds before he pulled it back, clearing his throat smoothly.
"Right," Grant said, sitting down at the center guest position, while Blair and Arthur sat beside him. "I understand we have a tight schedule today. We have reviewed the preliminary terms of the $900 million equity injection, and my team is ready to execute the master agreement immediately."
Daniel Mercer adjusted his glasses, looking at Grant across the wide mahogany table.
"Mr. Ellison," Daniel spoke calmly. "Before we discuss execution, we must address the mandatory pre-meeting protocol. Pursuant to Section 4 of Vale Meridian’s governance charter, all external equity partners must present verified proof of $100 million in unencumbered liquid reserves."
Arthur Sterling quickly stepped in, offering a smooth, rehearsed smile. "Mr. Mercer, as you know, Ellison Capital is currently undergoing a minor, temporary administrative review regarding a domestic asset restructuring. Our primary liquid accounts are subject to a short forty-eight-hour hold. We request a standard seventy-two-hour waiver on the reserve audit so we can sign the primary deck today."
Daniel leaned back in his leather chair. "A waiver? Mr. Ellison, you are asking this board to inject nearly one billion dollars of private capital into your firm while your personal assets are frozen under a marital fraud injunction?"
Grant's face tightened, a flash of irritation breaking through his charm. "It is a frivolous legal stunt filed by my estranged ex-wife, Mr. Mercer! It holds zero financial weight! Emily is an uneducated former assistant who understands nothing about capital markets! My legal team will have the freeze lifted by Wednesday morning!"
Blair chimed in smoothly, leaning forward. "Indeed, board members. Mrs. Ellison is simply using a low-level legal clinic to create temporary leverage in a custody dispute. It has no bearing on Ellison Capital’s solvency."
Daniel looked at Blair, then at Grant, a faint, razor-sharp smile touching his lips.
"An uneducated former assistant," Daniel repeated quietly. "Is that your official assessment of Emily Carter, Mr. Ellison?"
"That is the absolute truth," Grant scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. "She has nothing. She came into our marriage with nothing, she contributed nothing, and she currently resides nowhere. I assure you, her domestic tantrums will not affect Vale Meridian."
Daniel closed his leather folder with a soft clack.
"Then perhaps," Daniel said, turning his head toward the private side door of the boardroom, "you should tell her that yourself."
The heavy oak side door clicked open.
The entire boardroom went dead silent.
Grant turned his head, a smug, contemptuous smirk playing on his lips, expecting to see a low-level process server or a junior attorney.
The smirk vanished from Grant’s face so fast it was as if his skin had been turned to marble.
Stepping into the boardroom, flanked by two private security officers, was Emily.
She wore an exquisite navy velvet suit, a simple pearl necklace resting against her throat, her hair styled with flawless aristocratic elegance. Her face was serene, radiant, and utterly breathtaking.
Beside her, carried in a luxury bassinet by a private nurse, was baby Noah.
Grant’s jaw dropped open. His eyes bulged out of his head. He stared at his wife as if a ghost had just walked out of the wall.
Blair gasped out loud, dropping her gold pen onto the glass table. "Emily?!"
Grant scrambled to his feet, his chair scraping violently against the floor. "What the hell are you doing here?! How did you get past security on the lobby floor?!"
Emily didn't answer him. She didn't even look at him.
She walked gracefully to the absolute head of the mahogany table—the primary executive chair that had remained empty since Everett Vale's death.
A senior director stood up immediately, pulling out the grand leather armchair for her.
Emily sat down slowly, smoothing her velvet jacket, and placed her palms on the table.
Grant’s mind shattered into a million frantic pieces. "Get out of that chair! That is the Chairmanship seat! Are you insane?!"

Daniel Mercer stood up, bowing his head respectfully toward Emily, before looking dead into Grant Ellison's terrified, pale face.
"Mr. Ellison," Daniel announced, his voice echoing across the eighty floors of the tower. "Allow me to introduce the majority owner, controlling shareholder, and primary Chairwoman of Vale Meridian... Mrs. Emily Carter."
