Chapter 3 - THE FROZEN ASSETS

The next morning, at 6:45 AM, the sun rose over a freezing, frost-dusted Chicago.
Inside the master suite of the Ellison mansion, Grant woke up in a foul mood. The rain had stopped, leaving a bitter chill in the air. Beside him, Blair was sitting up in bed, wrapped in a silk robe, scrolling through her phone with a slight frown.
"What is it?" Grant grunted, rubbing his face.
"The morning financial briefs," Blair said, her voice laced with mild irritation. "The credit rating agency just placed a yellow watch on Ellison Capital’s secondary bond tier. It's nothing catastrophic, but the timing is annoying given our Monday meeting with Vale Meridian."
Grant sat up, reaching for his espresso on the nightstand. "It's just market noise. Once we sign the Vale Meridian equity deal on Monday, our rating jumps to triple-A overnight. Did Arthur file the emergency custody papers against Emily?"
"He filed them at midnight," Blair smiled, leaning over to kiss his cheek. "The court clerk flagged it as an expedited domestic petition. By Wednesday, a judge will sign an interim order granting you primary custody of Noah based on Emily’s lack of fixed residence and income."
Grant satisfied himself with a nod. "Good. She'll crawl back in forty-eight hours once her little pride trip wears off. She has no money, no connections, and nowhere to go. She'll sign whatever property waiver I put in front of her just to get an allowance back."
He swung his legs out of bed, picked up his phone, and dialed his private wealth manager at J.P. Morgan.
The call connected on the first ring. "Mr. Ellison," the banker’s voice sounded tense, almost breathless.
"Harrison," Grant said smoothly. "I need you to wire $250,000 to Blair Whitmore’s private account for the strategy retainer, and transfer $50,000 to my personal checking."
There was an agonizing pause on the other end of the line.
"Mr. Ellison... I can't do that."
Grant froze, his espresso cup halting halfway to his mouth. "What did you just say?"
"As of 5:00 AM this morning, a legal freeze order was placed on your primary liquidity accounts, including the joint credit umbrella registered under your estate."
"On whose authority?!" Grant roared, standing up so fast his chair scraped violently against the hardwood. "I hold seventy percent of those accounts!"
"The freeze was executed by Mercer & Sterling Global, operating on behalf of a senior trust mandate," Harrison explained nervously. "They filed a marital asset preservation injunction citing an immediate high-asset divorce action. Every credit card, secondary revolving credit line, and liquid reserve tied to your personal umbrella is locked until a preliminary judicial review."
Grant’s heart slammed against his ribs. "That's impossible! Emily doesn't have an attorney! She doesn't have twelve dollars to her name! Who the hell is Mercer & Sterling?!"
"They are the primary legal firm representing the Vale Meridian estate," Harrison whispered. "Mr. Ellison... they didn't just freeze your cards. They called in the $40 million collateral pledge you used for your private jet."
Grant dropped the phone onto the bed. His face went deathly pale.
Blair sat up straight, her sharp blue eyes narrowing. "Grant? What’s going on?"
"Emily..." Grant stammered, his mind racing wildly as he stared at the wall. "She... she called someone last night. She locked the primary lines."
"How?" Blair demanded, her voice losing its calm veneer. "She's a former museum assistant! She doesn't even know what a collateral pledge is! Who gave her access to Mercer & Sterling?"
Before Grant could answer, his phone buzzed again. It was a text from his lead corporate attorney, Arthur Sterling:
GRANT. WE HAVE A MASSIVE PROBLEM. VALE MERIDIAN’S BOARD JUST REVISED THE AGENDA FOR MONDAY'S 9:00 AM MEETING. THEY ARE DEMANDING A FULL PERSONAL GUARANTEE AUDIT BEFORE THEY SIGN THE AGREEMENT. IF YOUR LIQUID ACCOUNTS ARE FROZEN, WE CANNOT PASS THE AUDIT.
Grant grabbed his coat, his hands shaking violently. "Call Arthur. Tell him to get to the office right now! Find out where Emily is staying! I want her found in two hours!"
Across town, on the thirty-fourth floor of the Four Seasons, sunlight flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a breathtaking corner suite.
Emily sat in a plush velvet armchair, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, cradling a freshly bathed and fed Noah in her arms. Beside her sat a tray of fresh croissants, fruit, and hot tea.
Sarah Vance stood near the desk, holding a leather folder.
"Mr. Ellison has already sent two private investigators to check local mid-tier hotels in Lincoln Park," Sarah reported with a calm, amused smile. "He assumes you are staying at a Motel 6 or sleeping in a hospital waiting room."
Emily took a slow sip of her tea, her face radiant, peaceful, and entirely unfazed.
"Let him search," Emily said softly. "How is the audit report for Monday looking?"
"Mr. Mercer has finalized the terms," Sarah replied. "When Grant steps into the Vale Meridian boardroom on Monday morning, he will be required to present proof of $100 million in unencumbered liquid reserves to execute the deal."

"And how much unencumbered liquidity does he currently have with his frozen accounts?" Emily asked.
Sarah smiled sharp as a diamond. "Exactly four thousand dollars."
