Chapter 7 - THE CLEARING OF PENTHOUSE 4B

At five fifteen p.m., the sun began to set over Chicago, casting a long, amber glow across the frost-dusted towers of Gold Coast.

Outside the grand marble entrance of 880 N. Michigan Avenue, three heavy black moving vans were parked at the curb, flanked by two Chicago Police cruisers and four Hartwell security officers.

Inside Penthouse 4B, the atmosphere was chaotic, panicked, and suffocating.

Eleanor Hayes stood in the center of the grand living room, frantically throwing her designer dresses into a cardboard box, her hair unraveled, her pearls askew.

"Where is the silver tea set?!" Eleanor screamed at the moving staff. "That tea set belonged to my mother! You can't take that!"

A stoic female Hartwell security officer stepped in front of her, holding a legal inventory sheet. "The silver tea set was purchased using a Meridian corporate card in April of last year, Mrs. Hayes. It is listed as corporate property under asset seizure."

"This is outrageous!" Eleanor shrieked, tears ruining her expensive makeup. "My son is a senior executive! You can't treat us like common criminals!"

In the master bedroom, Victor sat on the edge of the bare mattress, his head buried in his hands. He was still wearing his tailored suit, but his tie was ripped off, his shirt unbuttoned, looking completely hollowed out.

Kendra Vale stood by the closet, furiously packing her luxury handbags into a leather suitcase.

"Kendra... please," Victor whispered, looking up at her with red, swollen eyes. "Talk to your brother... see if we can use the funds in the Apex account to get a lawyer..."

Kendra stopped packing, turned around, and looked at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom.

"Use the funds in the Apex account?" Kendra spat, her voice sharp as glass. "Are you blind, Victor?! The FBI seized my brother's bank accounts an hour ago! He's currently being questioned by federal prosecutors!"

"We... we can get through this..." Victor stammered, reaching out a trembling hand toward her. "We love each other, Kendra..."

Kendra let out a harsh, bitter laugh that echoed off the high concrete walls.

"Love each other?!" she sneered, snapping her suitcase shut. "I didn't love you, Victor! I loved the $120 million contract you promised me! I loved the penthouse! I loved the executive credit cards! You told me your wife was a penniless nobody! You were married to the single richest heiress in the Midwest, and you threw her into the rain for a bottle of Macallan!"

She grabbed her suitcase, shoved past him, and marched out of the bedroom without looking back once.

"Kendra! Wait!" Victor cried out, stumbling to his feet, but his legs were too weak. He fell onto his hands and knees on the cold hardwood floor.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the penthouse opened.

I walked into the living room, wearing a long black cashmere coat over my cream suit. Behind me walked Russell Kent and two uniformed Chicago Police detectives.

Eleanor froze, clutching a cardboard box, staring at me with a terrifying combination of hatred, fear, and desperate embarrassment.

"Olivia..." Eleanor whimpered, her voice cracking as she took a small step toward me. "Olivia, darling... please... we're family... Victor made a mistake, he was confused... you can't do this to your own mother-in-law..."

I stopped in the center of the living room—the living room where she had sat six months ago telling Kendra that I was a "gray little thing" who didn't deserve to be chosen.

I looked at Eleanor with complete, cold indifference.

"I don't have a mother-in-law, Eleanor," I said softly. "The annulment was granted forty-five minutes ago."

One of the police detectives stepped forward, pulling a legal document from his jacket.

"Victor Hayes? Eleanor Hayes?" the detective announced. "We have a warrant for your immediate deposition regarding federal corporate embezzlement, tax fraud, and criminal conspiracy."

Victor crawled out of the bedroom on his hands and knees, looking up at me from the floor like a broken, pathetic shadow of the arrogant man who had stood over me sixteen hours ago.

"Liv..." Victor wept, tears dripping onto my leather slippers as he reached out to touch my coat. "Please... forgive me... I'm sorry... I'll do anything... I'll be the husband you wanted... please don't send me to prison..."

I stepped back smoothly, pulling my coat away from his trembling fingers.

I looked down at him—the man who had spent seven years believing my silence was weakness, the man who thought he had assigned my place in the world.

"You assigned my place, Victor," I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear my final words. "Now I'm assigning yours."

I turned on my heel and walked out of the penthouse into the quiet, warm light of the evening, leaving him behind in the dark.
