Chapter 6 - THE RATIFICATION

The silence that followed Russell’s announcement was so dense you could hear the snow tapping against the high glass windows outside.

In the gallery, Eleanor Hayes slowly sank back into her seat, her hand clutching her pearl necklace so tightly the string nearly snapped. Her face went from pristine pale to a sickly, mottled gray.

"Hartwell...?" Eleanor whimpered, her voice barely a breath. "No... no, that's impossible... she's a quiet little girl from Logan Square..."

Kendra Vale backed up until her spine hit the gallery wall, her sharp eyes darting between my cream suit and the bowing board members. Her manicured hands were shaking uncontrollably.

Victor stood frozen behind his podium. Sweat was pouring down his temples now, soaking his silk collar, dripping onto his tailored jacket.

"Olivia...?" Victor stammered, taking a small, pathetic step toward the head of the table. "Liv... what... what is this? Is this a game? Is this because I was angry last night? Are you playing a joke on me?"

I slowly raised my eyes, locking my gaze onto his trembling face.

My expression was void of anger. Void of sadness. It was the calm, terrifying look of a judge reading a finalized sentence.

"I don't play games with company assets, Victor," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and crystal clear. "And I certainly don't play games with men who steal from my father."

Victor’s chest heaved. "Steal?! I didn't steal anything! I built this riverfront deal! I brought in the investors! I made this company millions!"

Russell Kent pulled a document from the blue folder and tapped a button on his tablet.

A massive wall-mounted digital projector hummed to life behind my chair, displaying a high-resolution financial flow chart.

"Over the past three years," Russell read aloud for the entire boardroom, "Victor Hayes diverted $4.2 million from Meridian’s primary development fund into a shell company called Apex Logistics LLC. A firm registered under the personal name of Ms. Kendra Vale's brother."

Kendra let out a sharp shriek in the gallery, covering her mouth.

"Furthermore," Russell continued, scrolling to the next slide, "Mr. Hayes utilized corporate expense accounts to purchase luxury jewelry, private jet rentals, and a $200,000 sports car—all disguised as 'consulting fees' for non-existent vendors."

Victor’s face went completely ghostly white. "That... those were legitimate marketing expenses! Vance authorized them!"

Chief Executive Vance stood up, his face filled with terror. "I authorized what you told me were municipal permit fees, Victor! You lied to the executive committee!"

"You're all against me!" Victor screamed, losing his executive composure entirely, slamming his fist onto the podium. "Olivia, tell them! Tell them we're married! Everything I have is yours! Everything you have is mine! Under Illinois marital law, you can't prosecute your own husband!"

I offered him a small, cold smile that made his blood turn to liquid nitrogen.

"Under Illinois marital law, Victor," I said softly, "marital assets apply to property acquired during the marriage. Hartwell Group was founded thirty years before I met you. And as for our marriage..."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a single sheet of paper, sliding it across the fifty-foot mahogany table toward him.

"That is a petition for immediate annulment based on corporate fraud, spousal battery, and criminal misrepresentation," I informed him.

Victor stared at the paper. "Spousal battery...? I didn't hit you!"

I tapped my laptop screen.

The massive wall monitor behind me shifted from the financial ledgers to a high-definition photograph—the picture I had taken sixteen hours ago showing the clear, purple handprint bruised across my left cheekbone.

Along with it, an audio file began to play through the boardroom's surround-sound speakers—a crystal-clear recording captured by the high-definition security camera outside Penthouse 4B last night:

SOUND OF A SHARP SLAP.

VICTOR'S VOICE: "Get out! You have nothing! You are nothing!"

SOUND OF THE HEAVY DOOR SLAMMING SHUT.

The entire board of directors gasped in disgust.

In the gallery, Eleanor covered her face with her hands, weeping silently in utter humiliation.

Victor fell back against his chair, his knees buckling, his breathing coming in short, ragged gasps as he realized that every second of his arrogance had been recorded, audited, and sealed.

"Victor Hayes," I said, my voice cutting through his panic like a steel blade. "By unanimous vote of the board of directors, your employment at Meridian BuildWorks is terminated immediately for cause."

May you like

"No... Liv... please..." Victor whimpered, tears finally spilling down his pale cheeks.

"And as controlling owner of Apex Properties LLC," I added, "your eviction from Penthouse 4B takes effect in precisely two hours."
