Chapter 8 - ECHOES IN THE COURTHOUSE

The federal courthouse in downtown Mexico City was a towering monolith of limestone and tinted glass, its steps worn smooth by decades of high-stakes legal battles. On a crisp autumn morning, the plaza outside was crowded with camera crews, reporters, and onlookers eager to catch a glimpse of the final legal proceedings in the collapse of the Ledesma-Alvarado corporate scandal.
Inside Courtroom 104, the air was cool and sterile. Judge Elena Morales sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, her expression stern as she reviewed the final plea agreement submitted by the prosecution and defense teams.
Arturo Ledesma stood at the defense table beside his court-appointed attorney. He looked a decade older than he had on the night he swaggered into the Gran Hotel Alvarado with Camila. His hair was uncombed, his skin pale and sallow from weeks inside the detention center, and the designer suit had been replaced by a standard gray inmate jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame.
Across the aisle, seated in the private gallery reserved for plaintiffs and victims, sat Mariana Alvarado and Octavio Barrios. Mariana wore dark sunglasses and a simple black trench coat, her expression calm and detached, like someone watching a play she had already read to the final page.
“Mr. Ledesma,” Judge Morales said, her voice echoing clearly through the courtroom microphone. “You have entered a plea of guilty to multiple counts of wire fraud, corporate forgery, asset embezzlement, and perjury. Do you understand the terms of this disposition?”
Arturo swallowed hard, his voice trembling slightly as he spoke into the microphone. “Yes, Your Honor.”
“During these proceedings,” Judge Morales continued, her eyes fixing sternly upon him, “the court has reviewed extensive documentation establishing a systematic pattern of deception aimed at defrauding both your corporate partners and your spouse. The abuse of trust demonstrated in this case strikes at the heart of commercial integrity.”
She picked up her gavel.
“For the crimes of corporate fraud and financial embezzlement, this court sentences you to twelve years in federal custody at the Almoloya maximum security facility, with no possibility of early parole. Furthermore, all remaining personal assets, properties, and holdings are permanently forfeited to satisfy civil restitution orders.”
Bang.
The sharp crack of the gavel echoed through the courtroom like a final thunderclap.
Arturo closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping forward as the federal marshals stepped up on either side of him, clicking the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. He cast one desperate, fleeting glance toward the gallery, his eyes locking onto Mariana for a fraction of a second.

She didn't flinch. She didn't smile. She simply looked at him with the quiet, indifferent neutrality one might afford a stranger passing on the street.
The marshals turned him around and led him through the secure side exit, his orange jumpsuit rustling softly against the door frame until the heavy steel barrier clicked shut, permanently locking him away from the world of wealth, power, and privilege he had tried to steal.
