Chapter 8 - Voices from the Grave

Detective Vance placed the cassette into a portable player he had brought from his field kit. He hit play, and the low hiss of magnetic tape filled the dark library.
Then, my father’s voice filled the room. Strong, deep, and laced with an exhaustion I had never heard in him while he was alive.
*“Willa, my brave girl. If you are hearing this, Logan has made his move, and Julian has pulled the strings from the dark.*
*I knew what Logan was three months after you brought him home. I saw the greed in his eyes, but I also saw how much you loved him, and my greatest sin was hoping I was wrong. I was a coward, Willa. Instead of ripping him out of your life, I investigated him quietly. And what I found terrified me.*
*Julian didn’t just want my company. Twenty years ago, Julian and a syndicate of foreign developers bought up massive swathes of land along the Hudson corridor using laundered cartel funds through our shell logistics branches. When I discovered the books last year, I threatened to take everything to the federal prosecutor in Zurich.*
*Julian told me he would spare you if I kept quiet. But I know Julian. He never leaves loose ends.*
*Willa, the real power isn't Logan. Logan is just an arrogant boy drowning in debt whom Julian bought for pennies. In the red ledger in this safe, you will find the real names of the board members, the judges, and the politicians Julian owns.*
*Fight them, Willa. Reclaim what is ours. But trust no one. Not even the people who claim to have saved you.”*
The tape clicked off.
Silence engulfed the library. I sat down heavily in my father’s leather armchair, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.
“Trust no one,” I repeated, looking at the red ledger. “Not even the people who claim to have saved you.”
I looked up at Detective Vance. His face was entirely unreadable in the dim lamplight.
“Detective?” I asked, a sudden chill knotting in my stomach. “How did you know Brody was at the airport two hours ago? His flight wasn't scheduled until midnight, and his ticket was purchased under an alias.”

Vance didn’t answer right away. He calmly walked over to the library door, closed it, and turned the heavy brass deadbolt.
