Chapter 7 - The Secret Vault

By midnight, the grand ballroom was empty, but the war had only just begun.

Instead of going to a hotel, I had my private security escort me to my father’s old country estate in Westchester—a property Logan had tried to sell three times, but couldn't because the title was held in a blind trust tied to my biological signature.

My physical therapist and personal nurse, Elena, sat beside me in the rear of the armored SUV, carefully massaging the tight muscles of my calves.

“You pushed yourself too hard tonight, Willa,” Elena said gently, her eyes full of maternal pride and deep concern. “Four months of secret midnight workouts in my basement apartment... you risked tearing your tendon on that staircase.”

“If I hadn’t stood up, Elena, Logan would have had the security guards wheel me out the back door before I could open my mouth,” I replied, staring at my reflection in the dark glass. “I had to show them I wasn’t a victim anymore. I had to make them look at me.”

We arrived at the estate at two in the morning. The sprawling stone manor looked like a forgotten fortress against the winter fog.

Accompanied by Detective Vance and two armed officers, I was wheeled into my father’s former private library. The smell of aged paper, leather, and cedar still lingered in the air, preserved like an ancient tomb.

Behind the oil painting of my mother hung an antique cast-iron vault that Logan had spent months trying to crack without setting off the internal thermite failsafe.

I stood up from my chair, leaning against Elena’s shoulder, and pressed my thumb against the biometric sensor, then entered the six-digit date: the day my father had brought me home from the hospital when I was an infant.

With a heavy hydraulic hiss, the heavy steel door swung open.

Inside lay three black leather-bound ledgers, an encrypted external hard drive, and a silver audio cassette tape labeled with my name in my father’s bold handwriting: *FOR WILLA, ONLY IF I DON’T RETURN.*
