Chapter 5 - Grounded in First Class

By 2:00 AM, the drama was only beginning to metastasize.

I sat in my downtown apartment, sipping hot tea while ice packs rested against my bruised shoulder and the tender roots of my hair. On my laptop, my firm's internal portal was open alongside the corporate rewards account I had maintained for years.

Madison and Trevor had bragged for months about their three-week luxury honeymoon to Bora Bora. Overwater bungalow, private helicopter transfers, first-class roundtrip airfare on Singapore Airlines—all booked through my premier corporate concierge account because Arthur had promised he would "reimburse" me once the wedding budget settled.

He had never transferred a single dime.

I clicked open the reservation management portal. The total booking value was $42,500, entirely secured under my corporate credit line.

I didn't hesitate. With four deliberate clicks, I canceled the flight tickets, voided the resort reservation, and reclaimed the 400,000 corporate points I had earned through years of grueling business travel. Then, I added an automated refund request to my card.

My phone rang instantly. The caller ID flashed *Trevor Henderson*.

I put it on speaker. "Claire here."

"Claire! What the hell did you just do?!" Trevor’s voice was cracked with exhaustion and sheer panic. "We just bailed Madison out on a surety bond! We’re at the international terminal right now, and the check-in agent says our reservations were flagged as fraudulent and canceled!"

In the background, I could hear Madison’s hysterical screaming: *"Tell her I will kill her! Tell her I want my ticket!"*

"The tickets were booked under my corporate travel perks, Trevor," I said smoothly. "Since Madison is currently out on felony bail, she’s legally restricted from international travel anyway without a judge's prior written consent. I actually did you a favor. If she boarded that plane, she’d be facing flight-from-justice warrants."

"You vindictive bitch!" Trevor hissed, his polished veneer completely disintegrating. "Do you have any idea how much money my family put into this wedding? The gifts from my father’s partners were supposed to cover our expenses! We have nowhere to stay! The resort has a non-refundable same-day cancellation policy!"

"Not for the primary cardholder," I corrected him. "I just received my full refund confirmation. You two have a wonderful night at the airport motel. I hear the continental breakfast is tolerable."

"Claire, listen to me—"

I terminated the call and immediately blocked his number.

Five seconds later, a flurry of texts arrived from my mother:

*CLAIRE HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO YOUR SISTER ON HER WEDDING NIGHT?! SHE IS SITTING ON HER LUGGAGE CRYING IN FRONT OF STRANGERS! YOU ARE A MONSTER! YOUR FATHER IS HAVING CHEST PAINS!*

I didn't reply to her text. Instead, I sent an email to Mark Vance, carbon-copying Arthur’s primary lender at First National Trust:

*Subject: Immediate Revocation of Personal Guarantee & Demand for Repayment*

*To whom it may concern: Please be advised that effective immediately, Claire Montgomery has withdrawn all collateral backing the commercial credit facility for Montgomery Logistics LLC. Furthermore, formal demand is hereby issued for the repayment of the $250,000 subordinated bridge loan due on November 1st.*

I closed my laptop, leaned back against the cushions, and closed my eyes. For the first time in ten years, the suffocating weight of being the family’s invisible provider had vanished.

Tomorrow morning, the real reckoning would begin.
