Chapter 10 - The Gala of Reckoning

The annual Metropolitan Heritage Gala was the single most prestigious social event of the autumn calendar. Held in the grand rotunda of the city’s historical museum, it brought together the city’s top business magnates, venture capitalists, and political elite.
Arthur had spent months preparing for this night, intending to introduce Madison and Trevor as the new crown jewels of high society and pitch a group of angel investors to rescue his failing company.
Even with his world collapsing, Arthur’s pathological narcissism wouldn't allow him to stay away. He arrived at 7:30 PM, dressed in his rented tuxedo, with Eleanor clinging tightly to his arm in an outdated velvet gown. They looked like ghosts trying to pretend they were still alive, their forced smiles trembling as cold shoulders met them at every turn.
Whispers rippled through the grand ballroom the moment they walked past the champagne pyramids.
"Is that Arthur Montgomery?"
"I heard his daughter is facing prison time for grand theft."
"His credit facilities were pulled yesterday. He’s completely bankrupt."
Arthur stiffened, raising his chin, trying to maintain an air of aristocratic disdain. "Pay no attention to them, Eleanor," he muttered under his breath. "Once I speak with the chairman of Apex Capital, everything will turn around."
"Arthur..." Eleanor whispered, her voice shaking as she pointed toward the grand marble staircase. "Look."
A sudden hush fell over the three hundred guests in the rotunda.
Descending the marble stairs was not a disgraced daughter hiding in shame.
I wore an emerald-green silk column gown that caught the glow of the crystal chandeliers, perfectly tailored to highlight elegance and authority. My hair was swept up in an intricate, flawless twist, completely concealing any sign of Saturday night’s violence. Beside me walked Jonathan Sterling, the managing partner of Apex Capital—the very man Arthur was desperate to meet.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the gala master of ceremonies announced over the sound system. "Please join us in welcoming tonight’s keynote patron and newly appointed managing director of the Apex Regional Growth Fund... Ms. Claire Montgomery."
Applause erupted across the room.
Arthur staggered back as if slapped across the face. "Managing director...? Apex Capital?"
Jonathan Sterling led me directly to the center of the floor, right past Arthur and Eleanor. Jonathan glanced at Arthur with cold disinterest before turning to me with a warm smile. "Claire, your investment thesis on distressed logistics portfolios was brilliant. The board voted unanimously to back your acquisition strategy."
"Thank you, Jonathan," I said, my voice echoing gently across the listening crowd.
Arthur couldn't contain himself. The humiliation was too immense. He broke through the ring of onlookers, his face red with fury. "Claire! You took our warehouse debt and sold it to Apex?!"
The room went dead silent. Security moved in, but Jonathan waved them to hold for a moment.
"I didn't sell it to Apex, Arthur," I said, looking down at him with serene detachment. "Apex funded my acquisition. As of four o'clock today, my firm owns Montgomery Logistics in its entirety. You are officially terminated as CEO."
"You can't do this!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "I built that company! I gave you life! Everything you have belongs to me!"
"You gave me nothing but invoices and emotional blackmail," I answered, each word striking like a hammer. "You took my money, you forged my name, and you gave away my property to buy your favorite child a ticket into a world that never wanted her. Tonight, your business is mine. Your house is in receivership. And on Tuesday, Madison will stand before a judge."
"You monster!" Eleanor shrieked from behind him. "You destroyed your own family!"
"No, Mother," I replied, my voice steady and cold as steel. "I simply stopped paying for your lies."
Two uniformed security officers stepped forward, flanking Arthur and Eleanor. "Sir, ma'am, you are not on the patron guest list. You need to leave immediately."
As Arthur and Eleanor were escorted through the grand brass doors under the unforgiving gaze of the city’s elite, I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder.
May you like
I turned. Standing behind me was Richard Henderson.
