Chapter 9 - The True Reckoning

Two weeks passed.

The snow had melted into clean, crisp winter sunshine over the Greenwich estate. In the sunroom, Leo was taking his first wobbly steps toward Lily, who clapped her tiny hands in delight.

Arthur Harris walked in, holding two steaming cups of coffee. He handed one to me and sat down, watching the children with a fond smile.

"Cole’s formal indictment came down this morning," Arthur said quietly. "Twelve counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. His public defender tried to negotiate bail, but with his passport flagged and no personal assets remaining to secure a bond, the judge remanded him to the Metropolitan Detention Center until trial."

"Did he have anything left?" I asked.

"Not a cent. Sierra sold an exclusive tell-all interview to a tabloid for twenty thousand dollars, revealing every lie Cole ever told her. In it, she confirmed that Cole bragged about bleeding your trust dry while keeping you medicated and terrified at home." Arthur sighed. "Public sympathy for him is at absolute zero."

I looked out the window at the snow-covered garden where my father used to teach me how to prune roses. For years, I had believed that love required sacrifice—that being a good wife meant shrinking myself until Cole looked large.

Now, I was whole again.

"The firm has been rebranded as Bennett Capital," Arthur added with a smile. "Our institutional clients have reaffirmed their loyalty. The market loves the story of the founder's daughter reclaiming her throne."

"Good," I said, taking a sip of the warm tea. "My children will inherit a legacy built on integrity, not vanity."
