Chapter 3 - The Paper Kingdom

"Arthur! You son of a bitch!" Cole roared into his phone, storming onto the balcony into the freezing Colorado air. "What did you do? Why are my cards locked? Where is my wife?"

"Lauren is where you can never touch her again," Arthur replied, his voice as sharp as a scalpel. "And as for your cards... they were never yours, Cole. Every credit line, every corporate liquidity loan, every mortgage installment on your firm’s flagship fund was underwritten by the Bennett National Trust. You were merely an authorized signatory. An allowance recipient."

"I built Whitmore Capital!" Cole screamed, veins bulging across his forehead. "I am the CEO! I generate eighty million dollars in fees every quarter!"

"You generated fees using capital seeded by Judge Bennett’s estate," Arthur countered ruthlessly. "And under the Emergency Abuse and Infidelity Covenant Lauren signed into her trust structure before she met you, any proven act of financial coercion, physical battery, or marital betrayal triggers an immediate clawback of all trust-backed assets. The photographs you so carelessly snapped last night—and the medical documentation of the bruises on Lauren’s wrists—were filed with the New York Supreme Court thirty minutes ago."

Cole felt the ground drop from beneath his Italian leather slippers. "Bruises? She wouldn't dare. She’s too weak!"

"She was terrified, Cole. There is a difference. But the daughter of Richard Bennett does not stay terrified forever. Look at your email."

The call ended with a sharp click.

Cole’s hands shook so violently he nearly dropped the phone over the balcony railing. He pulled up his inbox.

There were ninety-seven unread emails.

The first was from the Chief Financial Officer of Whitmore Capital: *Cole, trading has been halted by FINRA. The Trust pulled our collateral cushion at 4:00 a.m. We are technically insolvent.*

The second was from the Port Authority: *Hangar lease canceled. Private jet grounded pending asset repossession.*

The third was a copy of an ex-parte emergency restraining order granted by Judge Eleanor Vance in New York County. It prohibited Cole from coming within one thousand yards of Lauren, Leo, Lily, or any Bennett property.

Behind him, the glass door slid open. Sierra was standing in her fur coat, clutching her designer bag, looking at him with sudden, sharp eyes.

"Cole," she asked slowly, the sweetness completely vanished from her tone. "Why did the hotel manager just walk up with two armed security guards asking us to vacate the suite immediately?"

"Sierra, shut up for a second," Cole hissed, trying to dial his head of public relations.

"Don't tell me to shut up," she snapped, stepping back into the room. "The front desk said the bill wasn't paid. They said the reservation was canceled by the cardholder. Who is Lauren Bennett?"

Cole looked at the young woman he had traded his family for, and for the first time in his life, he felt the suffocating chill of complete ruin.
