Chapter 8 - A New Christmas

Ten months later. Christmas Eve.
My new home—a light-filled, beautiful historic townhouse in Lincoln Park—was filled with the warm scent of fresh pine, roasted cinnamon, and baking sugar cookies.
A massive twelve-foot Christmas tree stood in the living room, glowing with warm white lights and decorated with colorful ornaments Lily and I had picked out together.
Soft jazz played from the speakers.
The front doorbell chimed.
I opened the door to find Sarah Mitchell, David Chen, Chef Marcus, and several of my closest friends standing on the porch carrying armfuls of wrapped gifts, wine bottles, and fresh flowers.
"Merry Christmas Eve, Maya!" Sarah cheered, stepping inside and hugging me tightly.
"Come in, everyone!" I laughed, taking their coats and leading them into the bright, warm living room.
Lily came running down the stairs, wearing a brand-new, sparkly gold Christmas dress. Her face was bright, her eyes sparkling with pure, unburdened childhood joy.
"Look at my dress, Aunt Sarah!" Lily giggled, spinning around in a circle so the golden skirt floated around her knees.
"You look like a princess, Lily!" Sarah smiled, crouching down to give her a hug.
Lily looked up at me, her cheeks rosy, her eyes filled with absolute trust and happiness.
"Do you think Mommy loves it?" Lily asked Sarah, looking at me with a mischievous grin.
I kneeled down beside my little girl, gently taking her small hands in mine, looking into her eyes.
"Mommy doesn't just love the dress, Lily bug," I whispered, kissing her cheek. "Mommy loves you. More than anything in the world."
Lily wrapped her tiny arms around my neck, holding me tight.
