Chapter 1 - The Eviction at the Mansion

The live camera feed on my phone screen was crystal clear.

Nathan was adjusting his silk bow tie in front of a towering fifteen-foot Christmas tree decorated with gold and crimson ornaments. Brooke Lawson stood inches beside him, wearing an off-the-shoulder emerald green velvet gown, holding a glass of vintage champagne. Nathan’s parents, Arthur and Eleanor Reed, were circulating among forty guests, beaming with pride as if Brooke were already their preferred daughter-in-law.

They were posing for a formal portrait when the front door bells chimed.

I sat on the edge of my bed, my six-year-old daughter Lily sleeping soundly in the adjacent room after I had changed her out of her lavender dress and promised her that Santa was still coming just for us. Beside me on the nightstand, my laptop glowed with real-time financial tracking applications and property deeds.

Through the mansion’s security feed, I watched two uniformed process servers step into the grand foyer, flanked by three local police officers and my attorney, Sarah Mitchell.

The music in the ballroom died instantly.

Arthur Reed, holding a crystal glass, stepped forward with his usual arrogance. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private family event on private property!"

Sarah Mitchell pulled a thick blue-bound legal packet from her briefcase, her voice echoing off the marble floors. "Mr. Reed, I am Sarah Mitchell, counsel for Maya Reed and Reed Culinary Group LLC. I am serving you with an emergency court injunction issued forty-five minutes ago by Judge Harrison."

Nathan rushed forward, his face pale, his bow tie half-crooked. "Sarah? What the hell are you doing here?! It’s Christmas Eve!"

"And as of 7:15 PM tonight, Nathan," Sarah said cleanly, holding up a certified property deed, "this residence is ninety-four percent owned by Reed Culinary Group LLC. Due to documented, unauthorized siphonings of company funds exceeding six hundred thousand dollars into personal accounts, the court has granted an immediate freeze on all corporate assets and a temporary lock-out order on all corporate real estate."

Brooke Lawson gasped, taking a sharp step back from Nathan. "Nathan... what is she talking about?"

"This is ridiculous!" Eleanor Reed shrieked, clutching her pearl necklace. "This is our home!"

"It was your home until three years ago when Maya personally structured a five-hundred-thousand-dollar bailout from her restaurant revenue," Sarah reminded them calmly. "And since this property is legally registered under corporate assets, and my client has filed for immediate corporate receivership and marital separation due to grand larceny and fraud, this premises is being locked down effective immediately."

The lead officer stepped forward. "Everyone who is not a legal resident on the corporate deed has fifteen minutes to clear the premises. That includes the party guests, caterers, and guests of corporate officers."

He looked directly at Brooke.

"Ma'am, that means you."

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Party guests in tuxedos and designer gowns began frantically whispering, gathering their coats, and heading for the door. Brooke turned to Nathan, her glamorous persona shattering into panicked shrieks.

"Nathan! You told me you owned this house! You told me your family was untouchable!"

Nathan grabbed Sarah’s arm, his eyes wide with wild, desperate fury. "Where is Maya?! Where is my wife?!"

Sarah pulled her arm free, looking him dead in the eye. "She's at home, Nathan. Putting your daughter to bed. And taking back everything you tried to steal from her."

On my phone screen, I watched Nathan drop his hands, looking around at his ruined party, his weeping mistress, and his terrified parents.

I closed the app, set my phone face down, and took a deep breath.

The battle for my life had just begun.
