Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Realm

With the fraud case closed and Ethan facing a seven-year federal prison sentence following a formal guilty plea, Northstar Capital underwent a massive corporate restructuring.
Warren Pike called me into his corner office overlooking Central Park on a Tuesday morning.
"Claire," Warren said, offering me a seat and handing me a hot cup of dark roast coffee. "The board met yesterday. Thanks to your audit, we recovered 92% of the stolen assets, avoided a public SEC collapse, and restored client confidence."
"That's great news, Warren," I smiled.
"We want you to join Northstar," Warren said directly. "Not as an external consultant. We want you as Chief Risk Officer and Senior Partner. We're offering a $2.5 million base salary, full equity partnership, and complete oversight of our compliance division."
I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the Manhattan skyline.
Two years ago, I would have been thrilled just to be invited to a corporate dinner as Ethan’s spouse. Now, the firm's CEO was begging me to run their executive board.
I took a slow sip of coffee and smiled.
"I appreciate the offer, Warren," I said calmly. "But I'm not taking the job."
Warren looked surprised. "Why not? Name your price, Claire. We can match whatever you want."
"It's not about money, Warren," I explained, setting my cup on his desk. "I’m expanding Vance Financial Intelligence into a full-scale corporate intelligence and risk management firm. We're opening our primary office on the top floor of the Chrysler Building next month."
Warren stared at me for a moment, then broke into a deep, genuine laugh. "You're building your own empire."
"I already built it," I corrected him with a warm, confident smile. "I'm just putting my name on the building."

Warren stood up, offering his hand with profound respect. "Then Vance Intelligence will be Northstar's primary security contractor. Congratulations, Claire."
"Thank you, Warren," I shook his hand firmly. "It's a pleasure doing business with you."
