Chapter 6 - The Bail Hearing

The federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan was packed on Friday morning for Ethan’s formal bail hearing.
Ethan was led into the courtroom wearing a navy prison jumpsuit, his hands and feet chained together. His hair was greasy, his eyes were sunken from lack of sleep, and his posture was completely broken.
Beside him sat a court-appointed public defender. His high-priced private defense team had backed out forty-eight hours earlier when their retainer check bounced due to the frozen accounts.
In the gallery sat Evelyn Vance, wearing a plain black coat, clutching a crumpled tissue, weeping softly.
I sat in the front row right behind the prosecution table, wearing a sleek cream blazer, looking calm, elegant, and completely unbothered.
When Ethan saw me sitting there, a flash of pure hatred burned in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by pathetic desperation.
"Your Honor," the Assistant U.S. Attorney argued before Federal Judge Sarah Robertson. "The defendant, Ethan Vance, engaged in a systematic, multi-million-dollar wire fraud scheme, stealing over $14 million from client accounts. Furthermore, he attempted to launder funds into offshore accounts and represents a severe flight risk. We request he be held without bail."
Ethan’s public defender stood up weakly. "Your Honor, my client is a lifelong resident of New York. He has no prior criminal record. We request bail be set at $1 million, secured by his marital property in Tribeca."
I leaned forward slightly, whispering to the prosecutor. The prosecutor nodded, stood up, and handed a document to the bailiff.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor added, "the property mentioned by defense counsel is owned 100% by the victim, Mrs. Claire Vance, under her maiden name. She has refused to pledge the asset. Furthermore, Mrs. Vance has filed a formal protection order against the defendant following a documented violent assault on the night prior to his arrest."
Judge Robertson reviewed the document, her eyebrows raising sharply. She looked down at Ethan over her reading glasses.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Robertson said, her voice echoing coldly in the courtroom. "Given the overwhelming evidence of financial fraud, your attempt to flee using offshore assets, and the pending domestic violence charges against you, this court finds you to be both a flight risk and a danger to the victim."
Ethan’s breath hitched. "Your Honor, please—"
"Bail is denied," Judge Robertson slammed her gavel down with a sharp THWACK. "The defendant will remain in federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center pending trial."
"No! No!" Evelyn shrieked from the gallery, fainting into the arms of a court bailiff.
Ethan thrashing against his chains as the guards dragged him toward the side holding door. "Claire! Please! Talk to me! Don't leave me in here! Claire!"

I didn't blink. I didn't say a word.
I simply watched him disappear behind the heavy steel doors, listening to the metallic echo of his chains fading into the dark concrete halls.
