Chapter 7 - The Ambush at Calumet River

The Calumet River grain silos stood like giant, rusting sentinels against the stormy midnight sky. The wind howled through the shattered concrete structures, driving cold rain sideways across the abandoned industrial yard.
Inside the main silo tower, Paulie Russo stood sweating under his heavy coat, clutching a metal briefcase to his chest. Beside him stood four armed Falcone syndicate guards, their assault rifles held at low ready.
Headlights cut through the rain outside as a sleek black sedan pulled to a stop near the entrance.
Don Salvatore Falcone—a heavy-set, ruthless man in his late sixties—stepped out under a black umbrella held by his bodyguard. He walked into the cavernous concrete room, his heavy shoes crunching over broken glass.
"You're late, Falcone!" Paulie stammered, his voice nervous and high-pitched. "Do you have the money?"
"Patience, Paulie," Falcone said smoothly, gesturing to his driver, who produced a heavy leather duffel bag. "Five million in unmarked hundred-dollar bills. Now show me the drive containing Moretti’s port routes."
Paulie opened the metal briefcase, revealing the glowing blue encrypted hard drive. "This drive contains every security clearance code, shipping schedule, and vault location Dante Moretti owns. You can dismantle his entire empire in a week."
"He certainly could," a deep, booming voice echoed from the dark catwalks high above them. "If Paulie actually possessed those codes."
Falcone’s guards instantly raised their weapons, scanning the shadowy rafters.
Dante Moretti stepped slowly down the steel spiral staircase into the floodlights, flanked by Marcus and twelve heavily armed Moretti security operators.
"Moretti!" Falcone gasped, stepping back behind his guards. "How did you find this place?"
"Paulie never was very smart with network security," Dante said calmly, stepping onto the concrete floor. "He used the exact same ghost script to access our backup server yesterday that little Lily Hayes caught six months ago. We tracked his IP signature within three minutes of him logging on."
Paulie’s face turned ash-gray. "Dante... please! It was Victor! Victor forced me to do it! He forced me to help with Christopher!"
"You put your hands on an innocent man, Paulie," Dante said, taking slow, deliberate steps forward. "You helped murder a father who was protecting this family. You don't get to blame Victor anymore."
Falcone looked at the armed men surrounding his team, then looked at Dante’s cold, unwavering eyes. Falcone was an old mobster who knew when a battle was lost before the first shot was fired.
"This is between you and your former employee, Dante," Falcone said quickly, holding up his hands and gesturing for his guards to lower their weapons. "The Falcone family has no interest in interfering with Moretti internal justice."
"Wise choice, Salvatore," Dante said smoothly. "Leave the money, take your men, and get out of my city."
Falcone didn't hesitate. He turned on his heel and rushed back to his sedan, leaving Paulie Russo standing alone in the center of the silo, clutching his useless briefcase.
Paulie fell to his knees on the wet concrete, weeping hysterically as Dante stepped up to him.
"Please, Dante! I'll give you everything! I'll testify against Falcone! Just let me live!" Paulie sobbed, grabbing at Dante's pant leg.
Dante looked down at the man who had helped destroy Christopher Hayes' life. He didn't raise his gun. He simply looked at Marcus.
"Hand him over to the state police team waiting outside," Dante ordered quietly. "With the backup drive and his full confession, Paulie will spend the rest of his life in the cell right next to Victor Vance."

"Understood, Boss," Marcus said, grabbing Paulie by his collar and dragging him out into the rain.
Dante picked up the metal briefcase containing the encrypted drive, walked to the doorway of the silo, and looked up at the clearing night sky. The storm was passing, revealing a blanket of bright, clear stars above the river.
