Chapter 5 - A New Beginning

An hour later, the sun finally broke through the gray Chicago clouds, casting warm golden light through the high windows of the estate's main parlor.
Elena Hayes sat on the plush velvet sofa, holding a formal legal document bearing the official seal of the Moretti Enterprise and a bank draft for two point five million dollars—the restored pension and financial restitution authorized by Dante.
Tears ran silently down her cheeks, but for the first time in three years, they were not tears of grief or exhaustion. They were tears of profound relief.
"This won't bring Christopher back, Mrs. Hayes," Dante said, sitting in the armchair opposite her, holding a cup of coffee. "I know no amount of money can ever repay the pain my ignorance caused you and your daughter."
Elena looked up from the paper, wiping her eyes with a lace handkerchief. "You restored his honor, Mr. Moretti. For three years, people in this neighborhood looked at my daughter like she was the child of a common thief. You gave her back her father's good name. That is worth more to me than any check."
Little Lily was sitting on the thick Persian rug near Dante’s chair, carefully setting up a wooden chess set she had found on the side table.
She picked up the brass pocket watch resting beside her, looking at its cracked glass face.
"Mr. Dante?" Lily called out softly.
"Yes, Lily?"
"Is the clock still making mistakes?"
Dante smiled—a real, genuine smile that transformed his sharp, intimidating features into something gentle and warm. He knelt down beside the little girl on the rug.
"No, Lily," Dante said softly. "The clocks are all working properly now. Thanks to you."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it to reveal a brand-new, custom-crafted crystal face designed to fit the exact dimensions of her father’s pocket watch.
"I had my jeweler prepare this for you this morning," Dante explained, gently taking the old watch from her hands. "We keep your father’s watch, we keep his spring, but we give it a clear new glass so you can always see the truth clearly."
Elena watched with a soft, tearful smile as Dante carefully snapped the new crystal into place over the brass watch face. The steady, rhythmic tick-tick-tick of the second hand echoed softly in the quiet room.
Lily took the restored watch, holding it up to her ear with a brilliant, joyful smile. "It sounds like a heartbeat!"
"It does, little one," Dante agreed softly.
Elena stood up, smoothing her skirt. "We will pack our things from the staff quarters today, Mr. Moretti. I’ll look for a small house near the coast."
Dante stood up and shook his head gently. "You don't need to look far, Elena. The estate at Oak Park—the one Victor Vance occupied—has been fully cleared and deeded under your name. It belongs to you and Lily now. And Lily’s education will be fully funded through whatever university she chooses."

Elena gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "Mr. Moretti... that’s too much! We can't accept—"
"It is the bare minimum owed to the family of a hero who died protecting my house," Dante said with quiet, absolute authority. "You will never have to worry about a bill, a job, or your safety ever again. You are under the personal protection of the Moretti family for the rest of your lives."
