Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

When Gabriel emerged back into the grand cathedral nave, the five hundred high-society guests were in an uproar of frantic whispers. The organ had stopped entirely. Camila was pacing at the foot of the altar, her father—a haughty, silver-haired venture capitalist—demanding answers from the bishop, while her mother fanned herself frantically with a lace handkerchief.
The moment Gabriel stepped out onto the marble chancel, the crowd gasped.
Walking beside Gabriel was Laura, her head held high despite her faded clothes, and little Sofia, who held Gabriel’s left hand with firm, proud fingers.
Camila rushed forward, her veil flying behind her, her face contorted into an expression of theatrical relief.
"Gabriel! Thank God!" Camila cried out, loud enough for the front five rows of society elites to hear. "I was terrified! You brought them back? Good. Let the security escort them to the back so we can begin our vows. Darling, everyone has been so worried about you. You look so pale—"
She reached out to take Gabriel’s hand, but Gabriel stepped back, avoiding her touch as if she were a plague.
He walked past her, directly to the carved brass lectern where the bishop’s microphone stood. He tapped the brass rim; the sharp *thump* echoed through the vaulted arches of the cathedral, instantly silencing five hundred people.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Gabriel’s voice rang out through the grand cathedral, calm, resonant, and deadly cold. "Distinguished guests, family members, and friends. I apologize for the delay. But before any vows are spoken before God and this congregation, there is a declaration that must be made."
Camila’s father stepped forward, scowling. "Sterling! What is the meaning of this spectacle? You are making a mockery of my daughter!"
"No, Mr. Vance," Gabriel replied, looking down from the lectern with eyes like frozen granite. "Your daughter made a mockery of this church, this marriage, and human decency long before she put on that white dress."
The cathedral erupted in shocked murmurs. Camila’s face turned from pale to ghostly white.
"Gabriel, stop!" Camila hissed, her voice trembling with panic as she ran toward the lectern. "Have you lost your mind?! I love you! I gave up everything to plan this life with you!"
"You love my bank accounts, Camila," Gabriel said into the microphone, his voice cutting through her protests like a broadsword. "You love my social standing. And you love the illusion of virtue you wear to galas while beating domestic staff behind closed doors."
"That is a lie!" Camila shrieked, turning toward the congregation with wide, theatrical eyes. "He’s being manipulated! This housekeeper—she’s a thief! She stole my jewelry! She’s trying to extort my fiancé because she knows how soft-hearted he is! She’s poisoning his mind with slander!"
Gabriel did not raise his voice. He calmly reached into his pocket, took out his phone, and tapped the screen once.
Above the grand altar hung two sixty-foot projector screens, originally installed by the wedding production team to broadcast the ring exchange and vows to the guests sitting in the rear balconies. With a hum of electronics, the projectors flickered to life.
Instead of romantic montages of Gabriel and Camila walking through vineyards, the screens illuminated with crisp, high-definition video feeds from the estate.
The audio roared through the cathedral’s state-of-the-art sound system.
Five hundred people watched in petrified silence as Camila Vance appeared on the sixty-foot screens, dumping hot soup onto the kitchen floor, grinding her stiletto heel into Laura's bleeding hands, screaming venomous slurs that echoed off the sacred stained glass. The entire congregation heard her mocking Gabriel as an "idiot country boy" and boasting about stealing his grandmother's emeralds to frame an innocent mother.
*"Scrub it, you worthless cow... once the ring is on my finger, I’m putting this entire drafty museum in my name..."*
The sound of Camila’s own voice echoed off the cathedral ceiling like the voice of a demon unmasked.
In the front pews, society matrons dropped their programs. Camila’s mother collapsed into her husband's arms with a choked sob. Journalists in the gallery scrambled frantically, their cameras snapping photos of the screens, capturing the absolute, incontrovertible proof of the socialite’s depravity.
Camila stood frozen in the center of the aisle. The silence that followed the end of the video was more devastating than an explosion.
She turned around slowly, looking at the faces of her friends, her family, and the city’s most influential leaders. Every single eye was looking at her with revulsion and disgust. The glittering fortress of social prestige she had spent her entire life building had just crumbled into radioactive dust before her eyes.
Gabriel stepped down from the lectern. He walked over to Camila, stopping three feet away.
"A person’s true character is not revealed by how they treat the powerful," Gabriel said, his voice quiet, steady, and devastating. "It is revealed by how they treat those who cannot fight back. You wore white today, Camila, but your soul is stained black."
He reached out, slipped his engagement ring off his pinky finger, and let it fall onto the marble floor. It clattered against the stone with a hollow sound, rolling to a stop against the hem of her designer dress.
"The wedding is cancelled," Gabriel announced clearly to the entire assembly. "And the district attorney has already been dispatched to your parents' estate."

Camila let out a ragged, choked gasp. She looked around desperately for an ally, but even her own father turned his face away in bitter shame. Unable to withstand the crushing weight of public exposure, Camila gathered her soiled white dress in both hands and ran blindly down the center aisle, sobbing in hysterical disgrace, chased by the relentless flashes of dozens of cameras until the heavy cathedral doors slammed shut behind her.
