Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Whispers

As the wedding day approached, Camila’s cruelty did not soften; it became frantic and reckless. She spent money with ravenous greed, ordering custom jewels, luxury gowns, and private catered parties for her high-society clique while Gabriel was away finalizing a billion-dollar merger in Chicago.
To hide her astronomical credit expenditures, Camila began doctoring the household ledger. She had thousands of dollars in luxury personal expenses billed under "Estate Maintenance" and "Household Provisions." But when Gabriel's accountants sent an inquiry flagging the suspicious domestic ledger spikes, Camila knew she needed a scapegoat.
Three weeks before the wedding, she called Laura into the master bedroom.
On the mahogany vanity sat an open velvet box containing an emerald brooch—an heirloom Gabriel had inherited from his grandmother. Camila stood by the window, smoking a long slim cigarette, a habit she hid meticulously from Gabriel.
"The accountants are asking questions, Laura," Camila said without turning around.
Laura remained by the doorway, her shoulders hunched, her uniform faded and washed thin. "Questions about what, Miss Vance?"
"About thirty thousand dollars that seems to have vanished from the estate checking account over the last three months," Camila turned, an evil smirk dancing on her lips. "I told Gabriel's chief financial officer that I suspected someone had been skimming cash from the supply budget."
Laura’s breath stopped. "Miss Vance, I have never stolen a penny! Every receipt I submit is for groceries, heating fuel, and cleaning supplies. I have the receipts in the pantry!"
"The receipts that were in the pantry are currently burning in the backyard incinerator," Camila replied casually, tapping her ash onto the silk carpet. "And look what I just found in your daughter's toy basket in the staff quarters."
Camila picked up the antique emerald brooch and held it between two fingers.
"No..." Laura shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. "No! Sofia would never touch that! She knows how precious that brooch is to Mr. Gabriel! You put it there!"
"Of course I put it there," Camila laughed, a dry, mocking sound. "Who do you think the police will believe? The future Mrs. Gabriel Sterling, or an impoverished housekeeper with an empty bank account and no family in this city? If Gabriel asks about the missing money or the brooch, I will tell him I caught you red-handed. But because I have such a *tender heart*, I haven't pressed charges yet."
Camila walked over, thrusting her face an inch from Laura's. The heat from her cigarette was near Laura's cheek.
"So here is the deal, Laura," Camila hissed. "The wedding is in three weeks. You will smile. You will keep this house spotless. You will keep your filthy brat locked in the servants' annex. And when the wedding is over, I am going to fire you without a single dollar of severance. If you say one word—one single breath—to Gabriel before I have that ring on my finger, I will call the district attorney. You will go to state prison for grand larceny. And Sofia will grow up in a group home, wondering why her mother abandoned her. Do you understand?"
Laura collapsed against the doorframe, her legs giving out. The room spun around her. She was completely trapped. Gabriel was a titan of business, but he loved Camila; Camila controlled the narrative, the house, the cameras, and the narrative of reality itself.
"I understand," Laura sobbed, covering her face with her cracked, bruised hands.
"Get out of my sight," Camila sneered.
What Camila did not notice, however, was the closet door that stood ajar in the corner of the master bedroom. Hidden between long hanging fur coats and garment bags, little Sofia was crouched on the cedar floor, her knees pulled tight against her chest. She had crept into the room earlier to look for her lost stuffed bear.
Sofia had heard every single word.
She had seen the brooch in Camila’s hand. She had seen the cruel laughter on Camila’s face, and she had seen her strong, beautiful mother break into pieces on the floor.
As Sofia sat in the dark closet, tears falling quietly onto her lavender dress, a fierce, desperate flame ignited within her small heart. She remembered how Mr. Gabriel used to kneel beside her in the garden, gently lifting an injured sparrow with his warm hands, telling her: *"Never be afraid of the truth, Sofia. The truth is the strongest shield in the world."*
May you like
She made a silent promise to her weeping mother. She would not let the monster win.
