Chapter 8 - The Gala of Light

One year after the dramatic day little Elsie interrupted the contract signing, the Viscari estate hosted the most magnificent gathering in its eighty-year history.

The grand dining hall—once a room of dark shadows, tense crime bosses, and terrifying threats—was transformed into a dazzling hall of light. Hundreds of white roses filled crystal vases, golden candles flickered on every table, and soft orchestral music floated from the balcony above.

Over two hundred guests attended the First Annual Audra Viscari Foundation Gala, including civic leaders, business executives, port workers, and community members.

Nico Viscari stood near the grand fireplace, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. He looked healthy, strong, and at peace. Gone was the cold, brooding mob boss who had spent years trapped in grief. In his place stood a respected civic leader, a visionary businessman, and a man who had reclaimed his soul.

Beside him stood Mara Collins, looking breathtaking in an elegant midnight-blue evening gown, acting as co-host and managing director of the foundation.

And running around the edge of the polished marble floor—carefully avoiding crossing the inlaid brass line that used to divide staff from owners—was little Elsie, dressed in a sparkly white party dress, laughing with three of her new school friends.

Nico watched her with a gentle smile.

Marco, dressed impeccably in a tuxedo, walked up beside Nico carrying two glasses of champagne. He handed one to his boss.

"A long way from where we were a year ago, Boss," Marco remarked softly, looking around the vibrant, happy room.

"Yes, it is, Marco," Nico agreed, taking a small sip. "A very long way."

"The Moretti family officially liquidated their last commercial properties in the city today," Marco added. "They moved their operations down to Florida. The city is clean, Nico. Completely clean."

"Good," Nico said. "Let's keep it that way."

Suddenly, the music softened, and David Miller stepped up to the microphone on the small stage at the front of the hall.

"Ladies and gentlemen," David announced, his voice echoing warmly through the room. "Please welcome the head of Viscari Enterprises and founder of the Audra Viscari Foundation—Mr. Nico Viscari!"

The room erupted into warm, enthusiastic applause.

Nico walked up to the stage, taking his place behind the microphone. He looked out over the crowded room—seeing port union leaders sitting beside city council members, seeing Mara smiling proudly in the front row, seeing little Elsie watching him with wide, idolizing eyes.

Nico held up his hands gently, and the room quieted down.

"Thank you all for being here tonight," Nico began, his voice deep, resonant, and filled with emotion. "Four years ago, I lost my wife, Audra. For a long time, I believed that grief was something a man had to carry alone in the dark. I believed that power meant keeping people at a distance, building walls, and trusting no one."

He paused, looking directly at little Elsie sitting in the front row.

"I was wrong," Nico said softly. "One year ago today, an eight-year-old girl walked across a line in this very room. She carried a broken phone, a little girl's courage, and a message that saved my life. She reminded me that truth is stronger than fear, and that love never truly dies—it simply waits for us to be brave enough to hear it."

Nico gestured to Mara and Elsie.

"Tonight, we don't just honor Audra’s memory," Nico continued, holding his glass high. "We honor the truth. We honor the working families of this city. And we promise that as long as the Viscari name stands, this house will be a home for justice, light, and hope!"

"To Audra! To the truth!" the crowd shouted in unison, raising their glasses in a ringing toast that echoed off the high rafters.
