Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Docks

Harbor Nine was bathed in a thick, eerie sea fog. Heavy rain lashed against the corrugated iron roofs of the abandoned shipping warehouses lining the pier. The ocean roared below, black waves crashing violently against the rusted steel pylons supporting the dock.
Inside Warehouse 4, two figures were bound to heavy wooden chairs beneath the harsh light of a single hanging bulb.
Bruno Viscari was bloody and bruised, his eyes wild with fear. Beside him, Graham Sloan sat shivering, his expensive Italian suit soaked in rainwater, staring helplessly at the dark shadows of the warehouse.
A heavy engine rumbled outside. Headlights cut through the fog as three massive dark SUVs pulled into the warehouse, their tires splashing through rainwater puddles on the concrete floor.
The doors opened, and ten armed men stepped out, led by Don Carmine Moretti—a ruthless, silver-haired mob boss who had competed with the Viscari family for thirty years.
Carmine stepped forward, holding a black umbrella, a golden signet ring gleaming on his finger.
"Graham! Bruno!" Carmine called out, laughing coarsely. "What is this? Is this how you welcome your new business partners? Bound to chairs like common thieves?"
"Carmine! Help us!" Graham screamed, his voice echoing frantically off the high rafters. "Nico knows! He found out about the offshore accounts! He knows about Audra!"
Carmine’s smile vanished instantly. His eyes narrowed as he gestured to his armed men. "Check the perimeter! It's a trap—"
BANG.
A single gunshot shattered the night, striking the cement floor inches from Carmine’s expensive leather shoes.
From the dark upper catwalks of the warehouse, twenty heavily armed Viscari security guards stepped into view, their assault rifles pointed directly down at the Moretti men.
Then, from behind the shadow of a giant shipping container, Nico Viscari walked into the light.
He wore a long dark trench coat, his face cold, his eyes carrying the dark authority of a king reclaiming his territory. Beside him walked Marco, holding a heavy tactical rifle.
"Welcome to Harbor Nine, Carmine," Nico said, his voice echoing with terrifying clarity. "You're standing on Viscari land."
Carmine looked up at the armed guards surrounding him, then looked back at Nico. He swallowed hard, trying to maintain his calm composure.
"Nico," Carmine said smoothly, raising his hands slightly. "There's been a misunderstanding. Your legal counsel, Graham, told me you were retiring. He offered to sell the harbor operational rights legally. I was just doing business."
"You were buying stolen property, Carmine," Nico replied, taking slow, measured steps toward the rival boss. "Stolen by a traitorous lawyer and a weak cousin. And worse... you funded the men who murdered my wife."
Carmine’s face paled. "I had nothing to do with Audra! I swear to God, Nico! That was entirely Bruno and Graham’s doing! They handled that internally! I just wanted the shipping lanes!"
Nico stopped five feet from Carmine. He looked over at Bruno and Graham, who were weeping hysterically in their chairs.
"Is that true, Bruno?" Nico asked softly. "Did Carmine order the hit, or was it your brilliant idea?"
"It was Graham!" Bruno shrieked, panic breaking his voice into a high-pitched whine. "Graham said if Audra made it to your office, we were all dead! He gave the order to Vance to cut the brake lines!"
Nico turned his eyes to Graham. The lawyer was shaking so hard his teeth were chattering.
"I... I was desperate, Nico!" Graham sobbed. "I spent my whole life in your father’s shadow, then yours! I took care of your legal messes! I wanted what was mine!"
Nico looked at the three men responsible for the darkest three years of his life. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't curse.
"Carmine," Nico said to the rival boss.
"Yes, Nico?" Carmine replied nervously.
"Drop your weapons, leave your vehicles, and get off my docks. If I ever see a Moretti soldier within five miles of this harbor again, I will burn your entire family business to the ground. Do you understand me?"
Carmine didn't hesitate for a single second. "Understood, Nico. We're leaving."
Carmine gestured to his men. They dropped their submachine guns onto the concrete floor, turned on their heels, and sprinted out into the rainy night on foot.
Now, only Nico, Marco, his guards, and the two traitors remained inside the warehouse.
Nico turned to Marco. "Call Chief Inspector Callahan. Tell him to bring federal agents to Harbor Nine. Give him the digital encryption drive from Audra’s phone."
"And what about these two, Boss?" Marco asked, gesturing to Graham and Bruno.
Nico looked down at his crying cousin and the pathetic lawyer who had destroyed his marriage.
"They stay right here," Nico said coldly. "In the rain, in the cold, until the state police arrive to arrest them for conspiracy to commit murder, federal wire fraud, and treason."
Nico turned his back on them as Graham and Bruno began wailing, begging for mercy.

"Nico! Please! We’re family!" Bruno screamed. "Nico!"
Nico didn't look back. He walked out of the warehouse into the fresh, rain-washed night air, taking a deep, clean breath for the first time in three long years.
