Chapter 5 - A Mother's Favor

Upstairs in the hotel’s penthouse suite, the roaring fire crackled against the glass hearth, casting a golden glow over the plush velvet couches. A spread of warm tea, fresh fruit, and delicate pastries had been laid out, but Emma hadn't touched a single bite. She sat on the edge of a chair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

Isabella sat across from her, holding a cup of chamomile tea. The older woman looked frail, but her eyes possessed an extraordinary brightness.

“Emma,” Isabella began gently, “I have been living in isolation at the family estate in Oak Ridge for over two years now. Ever since my husband passed and my memory began slipping, Vincent has surrounded me with nurses and doctors. But none of them look at me as a person. They look at me as a liability.”

Vincent stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the glittering skyline of Chicago, holding a crystal glass of bourbon. He listened quietly, not interrupting.

“Tonight, I snuck away from my medical escort because I simply wanted to see people dancing,” Isabella continued with a self-deprecating chuckle. “I wanted to feel normal again. When that girl screamed at me… I froze. My mind went blank, like it often does these days. I thought she was going to strike me.”

“She won't ever come near you again, Mother,” Vincent said, turning around.

“I know, son. But it wasn't you who saved me tonight. It was this brave young lady.” Isabella leaned forward, placing her cup on the table and looking earnestly at Emma. “Emma, Vincent tells me you have a younger brother who needs care.”

Emma nodded slowly. “Yes, ma'am. Leo is ten years old. He contracted a severe spinal infection two years ago. If he gets his physical therapy and medications, the nerve damage won't spread. But the clinic is expensive, and our parents died in an accident four years ago. I’m all he has.”

Isabella’s eyes softened with profound sympathy. “A girl of twenty-two carrying such a burden alone, yet you still had the courage to step between a monster and a stranger.”

Vincent walked over, setting his glass down. He reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick document. “Miss Carter, my mother’s private companion resigned three weeks ago. She has refused every replacement candidate my agency has proposed. She finds them cold, clinical, and intrusive.”

Emma looked between Vincent and Isabella, confused. “I don't understand, Mr. Moretti. I’m just a banquet server. I don't have nursing credentials.”

“My mother doesn't need another nurse; she has three round-the-clock doctors on staff at the estate,” Vincent explained, his deep voice commanding yet surprisingly gentle. “She needs someone honest. Someone with genuine empathy who isn't intimidated by wealth or terrified of speaking up. Tonight, you proved you have more backbone and compassion than anyone in my social circle.”

He pushed the contract across the table.

“The position of personal companion to Isabella Moretti. Your duties will include keeping her company, managing her daily schedule, and accompanying her on walks. The base salary is two hundred and fifty thousand dollars annually, with full health insurance coverage through the Moretti Foundation—which covers your brother’s surgery, rehabilitation, and living expenses indefinitely.”

Emma’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart thumped so violently she thought it might shatter her ribs. “T-two hundred and fifty thousand dollars? Full coverage for Leo?”

“On one condition,” Vincent added, his gaze locking onto hers with unwavering intensity. “Absolute loyalty. If anyone approaches you regarding my family, you report it to me immediately. You live on the estate with your brother in the guest manor. You do not talk to the press, and you do not betray my mother's trust.”

Emma looked down at the paper, tears blurring her vision. For four agonizing years, she had scavenged for pennies, skipping meals, washing dishes until her hands bled, praying for a miracle that never seemed to come. And now, sitting before her was the salvation of her little brother.

“I will protect her with my life,” Emma said, her voice shaking with emotion. “I swear it, Mr. Moretti.”

Isabella beamed, clapping her hands softly. “Welcome to the family, Emma.”
