Chapter 2 - The Cold Reckoning

The silence in the grand ballroom was so profound that the faint hum of the chandelier’s crystal pendulums seemed deafening. Every pair of eyes was glued to Vincent Moretti. His posture was rigid, his gaze cutting through the air like a razor as he leveled it squarely upon Victoria Vance.
Victoria felt her throat tighten to the width of a needle. Her hand, still burning with the phantom imprint of Emma’s grip, dropped awkwardly to her side. “Mr. Moretti… Vincent,” she stammered, offering a tremulous smile that failed to mask the sheer terror pooling in her chest. “You must understand. There was a misunderstanding. This girl—she behaved with utter vulgarity. She laid hands on me!”
“Did she?” Vincent’s voice was dangerously low, lacking any inflection, which somehow made it ten times more terrifying.
Beside him, Isabella sat in her wheelchair, her breathing finally evening out as she rested a fragile, wrinkled hand against her son’s tailored sleeve. Her fingers were trembling, but her gaze toward Emma was filled with soft warmth and overwhelming relief.
“She defended my mother,” Vincent continued, his voice slicing across the ballroom. “While you raised your hand against a woman who has lived more years of honor than your family has spent buying their way into high society.”
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered socialites. To be publicly dismantled by Vincent Moretti was a social death sentence; to have one’s family name dragged into the dirt by him was financial annihilation.
“I didn't know!” Victoria pleaded, tears of humiliation springing to her eyes. Her pristine facade was crumbling into desperate hysteria. “She looked like… she wasn’t wearing formal wear! She was wandering alone near the buffet! I thought she was an intruder, someone who didn’t belong—”
“My mother belongs anywhere she wishes to be,” Vincent stated coldly. He turned his head slightly toward a man standing stiffly near the double mahogany doors. “Marcus.”
Marcus, Vincent’s chief of staff, stepped forward instantly. “Yes, sir.”
“The Vance Group’s logistics bid for the harbor terminal project—terminate it tonight. Strip their company of all vendor privileges across every Moretti subsidiary.”
Victoria gasped as though she had been plunged into icy water. “Vincent, please! My father spent three years securing that contract! It will ruin us!”
“Then your father should have spent three years teaching you how to treat human beings,” Vincent replied without blinking. “Security, escort Miss Vance from the premises. If she ever steps within a hundred yards of my mother again, the consequences will not be limited to business.”
Two towering security guards materialized behind Victoria, their expressions grim. With her head bowed in disgrace and the murmurs of her peers buzzing around her like hornets, Victoria was escorted out through the side doors.
The banquet manager, Mr. Sterling, who had previously tried to rip Emma’s apron off and throw her into the street, looked like he was about to faint. He dropped to his knees right there on the polished marble. “Mr. Moretti, sir! I was only trying to maintain protocol! If I had known—”
“You are relieved of your duties,” Vincent said flatly, not even looking down at him. “Pack your things and leave.”
Finally, the room fell into complete hush once more. Vincent took a slow breath, turned around, and looked directly at Emma Carter.
Emma was still standing frozen by the serving cart, clutching a linen napkin so tightly her knuckles were white. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She was just an impoverished girl working fourteen-hour shifts to afford insulin and physical therapy for her sickly little brother. She had never been addressed by anyone of Vincent Moretti's stature in her life.
Vincent stepped toward her, stopping just two paces away. “Miss Carter.”
“Y-yes, sir?” Emma whispered, her voice barely carrying.

Isabella looked up at Emma, her eyes glistening with genuine affection. “Come here, child,” the elderly woman said gently, extending her frail hand. “Please. Come closer.”
