Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush

The top floor of Vale Tower in Midtown was a shrine to corporate power. Glass walls, polished black granite, and thirty board members seated around an eighty-foot boardroom table.

At the head of the table sat Julian Vance. He looked immaculate in an Italian designer suit, laughing casually with two older board directors, radiating arrogant confidence.

"Gentlemen," Julian said, checking his gold Rolex. "It is five minutes past two. As you know, my cousin Adrian has suffered severe neurological setbacks following the tragic events at the gala. His former fiancée’s betrayal has destabilized his mental state. Under Section 14 of our corporate charter, I move to declare him medically incapacitated and transfer executive authority to me as interim CEO."

"Seconded," an elderly director chimed in quickly.

"Splendid," Julian smiled, raising his hand. "All those in favor—"

The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding boom.

Every head in the room snapped around.

I walked through the doorway first, holding a thick leather dossier under my arm. And right behind me, rolling forward with quiet, lethal precision, was Adrian Vale. Flanking him was Eleanor Vale, her chin held high, followed by Mark Sterling and two uniformed federal marshals.

The silence in the room was instantaneous and suffocating.

Julian’s smile melted off his face, replaced by a pasty gray pallor. "Adrian? What is this? This is a closed board meeting—"

"This is *my* board meeting," Adrian said, his voice cutting through the microphone system embedded in the conference ceiling.

He wheeled himself directly to the opposite end of the long table, staring straight down the eighty-foot expanse at his cousin.

"Adrian, you are unwell," Julian stammered, attempting to recover his composure. "You should be resting at the clinic. We are handling company business—"

"I am perfectly well, Julian," Adrian interrupted, his tone freezing the room. "In fact, since I stopped ingesting the sedatives you paid Victoria to feed me, my head hasn't been this clear in twelve months."

Murmurs of shock rippled through the directors.

"That's absurd! Slander!" Julian shouted, slamming his palm on the desk. "Security! Remove these intruders!"

"Security answers to the majority shareholder," Eleanor Vale spoke, her voice booming with undeniable authority. "Which happens to be my grandson and myself. Sit down, Julian, before the marshals put your face against the granite."

Mark stepped forward, plugging a flash drive into the boardroom podium. Instantly, the massive projector screens on both sides of the room lit up.

Bank wire transfers. Encrypted text messages. Recorded audio logs from Victoria’s burner phones.

And finally, the signed confession of Frank Miller, the upstate mechanic.

Julian stared at the screens, his breathing turning into shallow gasps.

"You tried to kill me on Route 9," Adrian said, each word landing like an executioner's blade. "When the canyon crash failed to snap my neck, you planted Victoria in my life to keep me crippled and steal fourteen million dollars to cover your gambling debts. You thought a man in a wheelchair couldn't fight back."

Adrian leaned forward, his eyes burning with triumphant fire. "You were wrong."

One of the federal marshals stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, grand larceny, corporate espionage, and conspiracy."

May you like

Julian stumbled backward out of his leather executive chair, knocking over a crystal water pitcher. "No! Wait! It wasn't just me! You don't understand who backed this!"
