Chapter 4 - The Price of Loyalty

By dawn, the internet was burning.

Tabloids, celebrity blogs, and financial news sites had plastered high-resolution photos of the ballroom altercation across the front pages. One particularly viral clip, recorded by an influencer guest near the dessert table, showed the exact moment Victoria raised her hand—and the moment I caught her wrist in midair.

The headlines were vicious:

*FALL OF THE VALE DYNASTY: BILLIONAIRE'S HEIRESS ENGAGEMENT IMPLODES IN $14M FRAUD!*

*CINDERELLA OR CON ARTIST? WHO IS THE MYSTERIOUS MAID GUARDING ADRIAN VALE?*

By ten in the morning, Victoria’s public relations team launched a desperate counter-offensive. An exclusive interview dropped on a prominent morning gossip show featuring Victoria wiping away theatrical tears in a sleek white silk blouse.

"I was blindsided," Victoria wept into the camera. "Adrian has been deteriorating mentally since his accident. He became paranoid, aggressive. And that maid... Maya Torres... she systematically isolated him from me. She fed him lies, turned him against his own family, and now millions are missing while she positions herself at his side. I fear for Adrian’s safety."

I stood in the penthouse kitchen, watching the broadcast on the small mounted TV, my stomach knotting into tight coils. My phone on the counter was buzzing nonstop with calls from unknown numbers, blocked callers, and even estranged relatives who hadn't spoken to me in a decade.

"Turn that trash off," a voice said from the doorway.

I spun around. Adrian was wheeling himself into the kitchen. He had shed his formal tuxedo for a charcoal cashmere sweater, his dark hair falling slightly over his forehead. Without the sedatives in his system for twenty-four hours, the foggy haze in his eyes was completely gone. In its place was a sharp, calculating focus.

I grabbed the remote and killed the screen immediately. "I'm sorry, Mr. Vale. I didn't mean to—"

"You have nothing to apologize for," Adrian said, stopping his chair beside the marble island. "She’s backed into a corner. When hyenas are trapped, they snap at anything that moves."

"They're digging into my past," I whispered, holding my hands against the counter to stop them from shaking. "Reporters are outside my mother's small duplex in Queens. They found out my father had medical debts, that we filed for bankruptcy after his death. They're making it sound like I infiltrated your house to rob you."

Adrian reached across the counter. For a second, I thought he was reaching for a glass, but his warm, calloused fingers closed gently over mine.

His touch sent an unexpected jolt through my chest.

"Look at me, Maya," he said firmly.

I looked at him.

"You saved me from a humiliation that would have haunted me for the rest of my life," he said softly, his voice rich and steady. "You stood in front of a blow meant for me when no one else in that room had the spine to move. I don't abandon people who bleed for me."

He pulled a leather portfolio from the side pocket of his chair and laid it before me.

"Starting today, you are no longer housekeeping staff. You are my executive personal liaison. Your salary is quadrupled. I’ve already dispatched private security to Queens to guard your mother’s home around the clock. Any reporter who steps past her front gate will be arrested for trespassing."

I stared at the paperwork, stunned. "Mr. Vale... I can't accept this. I just did what was right."

"You did what was extraordinary," Adrian countered, a ghost of an amused smirk touching his lips. "And call me Adrian. If we’re going to survive the war Victoria and Julian just declared, we need to be on the same side of the line."

Before I could answer, the elevator chimes chimed in the foyer.

Mark Sterling hurried into the kitchen, his coat unbuttoned, his expression dark.

"Adrian, we have a breach," Mark announced out of breath. "Victoria just posted a five-million-dollar bond arranged by Julian’s offshore allies. She’s out of custody. And twenty minutes ago, she applied for an emergency court injunction to freeze your company voting shares."
