Chapter 8 - THE MESSAGE INSIDE THE LOCKET

Thomas Avery examined photographs of the locket and confirmed that the initials were likely his.
He remembered giving Claire a small identification token during their investigation. It was not a secret device or a hidden recording system. It was simply a way for her to remember his name and contact information if she needed help.
Claire had later returned it.
The question was why it had ended up inside Lily's locket.
Nathaniel brought the original to a specialist jeweler, who carefully opened the frame without damaging it.
Behind the photograph was a narrow strip of paper.
Claire's handwriting covered both sides.
The note was addressed to Lily.
My beautiful girl, if you ever find this, remember that you are loved more than you can imagine.
If someone tells you that love means being afraid, they are wrong.
If someone tells you that keeping a secret is more important than your safety, they are wrong.
Trust the people who let you ask questions.
And always remember that your father loves you, even when he doesn't know how to show it.
Nathaniel sat in silence.
He had spent three years blaming himself for not recognizing how frightened Claire had become.
Now her words seemed to reach across time, telling him that he could still choose to be the father Lily needed.
Daniel read the note and gently returned it to the envelope.
“It's important evidence of Claire's concerns,” he said, “but we should be careful not to treat it as proof of every allegation.”
Nathaniel nodded.
The financial investigation had also advanced.
Auditors had traced several transfers through Richard's companies. Some transactions appeared to have been concealed through false descriptions, and investigators were examining whether the foundation had been used to disguise the movement of money.
Richard denied wrongdoing.
Vanessa denied coordinating any plan to remove Lily from Nathaniel's care.
But the evidence was becoming difficult to dismiss.
The attempted school enrollment, the guardianship documents, the threats, and the security recordings all pointed to a deliberate effort to gain control over Lily and the family's finances.
Then the authorities found an email sent by Vanessa to a residential academy.
It requested that Lily be admitted without Nathaniel's approval.
The message described Nathaniel as unstable and claimed that the child needed immediate protection.
Attached was a forged statement bearing the name of a physician who had never treated Nathaniel.
The academy had refused to finalize the enrollment because the documents could not be verified.
That refusal may have prevented Lily from being taken away.
Nathaniel felt both relief and fury.
For months, Vanessa had been preparing a future in which his daughter would live far from home, isolated from the people who knew what was happening.
He refused to let the discovery turn him cruel.
He focused on building a safe routine for Lily.
She returned to school with a counselor's support. Eleanor continued staying with them, and Nathaniel changed his work schedule so he could attend her appointments and school activities.
One afternoon, Lily asked whether her mother had known Vanessa was dangerous.
Nathaniel took a long breath.
“Your mother was worried about some things, sweetheart. We are still learning exactly what happened.”
“Did she leave me the letter because she knew she was going to die?”
“I don't know.”
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
Nathaniel held her while she cried.
He did not offer a false answer.
He simply stayed.
That evening, Daniel received a call from the prosecutor's office.
Investigators had found the missing original authorization connected to the suspicious financial transfers.
It was stored in a safe deposit box rented by Richard Sterling.
The document carried Claire's signature.
But a handwriting specialist had identified significant inconsistencies.

The authorization appeared to be forged.
And the person who had witnessed it was Vanessa.
