Chapter 7 - THE TRAP AT THE HOTEL

Nathaniel wanted to go to the hotel immediately.

Daniel stopped him.

“That's exactly what they want. We will not risk Lily's safety or yours by walking into an unknown situation.”

They turned the note over to the police.

Investigators reviewed the security footage and began tracing the delivery worker and the maintenance uniform.

Nathaniel agreed to cooperate with a controlled operation designed by law enforcement.

He would not carry the original blue ledger. Instead, investigators would determine what could safely be done without compromising the evidence.

The hotel room was registered under a false name.

The reservation had been paid for through a company connected to Richard Sterling.

At the scheduled time, a man entered the room.

He was not Vanessa.

It was Peter Sloan, the former employee who had once worked for Nathaniel's company.

Peter had already been questioned about suspicious financial transactions, but he had not admitted to knowing anything about Claire's death.

Under lawful supervision, investigators approached him.

Peter immediately asked for a lawyer.

After consulting counsel, he agreed to cooperate.

He explained that Richard had hired him to retrieve documents from Claire's office shortly before her death. Peter had not known what the documents contained, but he had been paid to make copies of financial records and deliver them to Vanessa.

Later, Richard told him that Claire had become a serious problem.

Peter insisted he had never been told to harm her.

“I thought it was business,” he said. “I didn't know anyone was in danger.”

Investigators asked about the car.

Peter admitted that he had arranged for someone to visit the repair shop, but he claimed the purpose was to locate documents Claire had left inside the vehicle.

His story remained unverified.

The investigation continued.

Meanwhile, Vanessa released a statement through her publicist claiming Nathaniel was emotionally unstable and had used violence against her security chief.

She also alleged that he was keeping Lily from her without justification.

The story spread across social media.

Headlines questioned whether the billionaire had become too controlling after his wife's death.

Nathaniel refused to trade accusations in public.

His attorney released a short statement confirming that the family's safety concerns had been reported to the authorities and that he would not discuss a minor child's private circumstances.

Then the police recovered a deleted recording from a device associated with Victor Hale.

In it, Vanessa could be heard discussing Lily.

“She needs to believe her father is dangerous,” Vanessa said. “Once she does, she'll cooperate.”

Victor asked what would happen if Lily refused.

Vanessa's response was chilling.

“Then we send her away before Nathan discovers what Claire left behind.”

The recording did not establish every detail of the scheme, but it contradicted Vanessa's public claims that she had been trying only to discipline a difficult child.

The authorities added it to the evidence.

That evening, Lily asked Nathaniel whether Vanessa would come back.

He knelt beside her bed.

“I don't know what the court or investigators will decide. But I promise you that no one will take you anywhere without the proper safeguards.”

“Can she hurt you?”

Nathaniel gently brushed a curl from her forehead.

“I have people helping me. And I will make sure you are safe.”

Lily hugged him.

Then she pulled the silver locket from beneath her nightgown.

“Mommy told me this was important.”

Nathaniel opened it.

Inside was a tiny photograph of Claire.

He had seen the photograph countless times.

But now he noticed a small mark on the back of the metal frame.

Three letters.

T.A.

Thomas Avery.

He called Daniel immediately.

The locket might have been a keepsake.

Or it might have been the last thing Claire had deliberately placed in Lily's care.
