Chapter 9 - The Galà Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Pierre Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of blood money dressed in diamonds and velvet. Crystal chandeliers bathed four hundred members of the eastern seaboard's underworld elite in warm, golden light.

Adrian entered alone.

Whispers rippled through the hall immediately. A Don never arrived at the annual summit without his wife or his top lieutenants. Adrian wore midnight-blue velvet, his jaw set like granite, ignoring the speculative smirks of rival bosses.

"Adrian!"

Sal Castiglione approached him, surrounded by four heavy-set bodyguards. Sal was a rotund, brutal man who wore too much cologne and governed the northern territory with a butcher’s cleaver.

"Sal," Adrian greeted coldly, not offering his hand.

"Heard your docks are having some... mechanical difficulties," Sal sneered, swirling a glass of champagne. "Tragic when a man’s house is in disorder. If you need a real man to manage your cargo, my boys can take over the terminal by midnight. Save you the embarrassment."

Adrian stepped forward, his eyes boring into Sal’s with lethal intent. "Take one step toward Pier 42, Sal, and I’ll feed your body to the stripers off Long Island."

Before Sal could reply, the heavy brass doors of the ballroom swung wide open.

The ambient chatter of the four hundred guests died instantly.

A woman stood at the top of the marble entryway.

She did not wear the demure, high-necked pastels Adrian had always insisted upon. She wore a backless, emerald-green silk gown that clung to every curve of her body like liquid poison. Her dark hair was pinned up in an intricate, regal chignon, exposing the elegant line of her neck and shoulders.

Around her neck was no Moretti diamond. She wore the legendary Vance emerald pendant—a heirloom thought lost when her father’s estate was seized.

She looked radiant. Powerful. Untouchable.

Beside her, holding her arm with respectful deference, was not a bodyguard, but Julian Thorne—the untouchable attorney general’s brother and the most powerful non-aligned banker on the eastern seaboard.

Adrian froze. The glass in his hand shattered, red wine and shards spilling across the white linen tablecloth.

"Sophia..." the name tore from his throat, barely a whisper.

She didn't glance his way. She descended the stairs with the grace of an empress entering an arena, every eye in the room tracking her movements. Men who had treated her like a shadow for three years suddenly bowed their heads as she passed.

She walked straight past the Moretti table, stopping only when she reached Sal Castiglione.

"Mr. Castiglione," Sophia’s voice was clear, melodic, and carried across the quiet ballroom. "I understand you were inquiring about the shipping rates at Pier 42."

Sal blinked, completely off-balance. "Mrs. Moretti... I was just—"

May you like

"Miss Vance," she corrected smoothly, her smile sharp enough to draw blood. "And the harbor is closed to your shipments indefinitely, Sal. Your cargo has been flagged for federal inspection at sunrise. Have a wonderful evening."
