Chapter 3 - THE FILE BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR

At nine o'clock, Eleanor assembled everyone in the library.
Daniel arrived first. Vanessa followed several minutes later, wearing a cream-colored dress and a carefully practiced expression of innocence.
Marcus Reed was already there.
He stood near the fireplace, his hands clasped in front of him.
Vanessa stopped when she saw him.
It was a small reaction, but Eleanor noticed.
"Please sit down," Eleanor said.
Marcus remained standing.
"I don't see why I'm here."
"Because your name appears in several financial records connected to Whitmore Capital."
"I was a consultant."
"Then you should have no difficulty answering questions."
Eleanor placed three documents on the table.
The first showed the disputed transfers. The second contained the ownership details of the consulting company. The third was a copy of an email recovered from a company server.
Daniel leaned forward.
"What's this?"
"A message sent from Vanessa's account to Marcus six weeks ago," Eleanor replied.
Martin read the relevant passage aloud.
"The wedding gives us the perfect opportunity. Once Daniel is officially married, everyone will assume we're acting together. By the time Eleanor notices, the transfers will be complete."
Daniel stared at his wife.
Vanessa shook her head immediately.
"That email is fake."
"The records have been preserved for independent examination," Martin said. "You will have an opportunity to challenge their authenticity through the proper process."
"You can't prove I wrote it!"
Marcus suddenly cleared his throat.
"Vanessa, perhaps we should stop pretending."
She turned toward him.
"Shut up."
Marcus ignored her.
He explained that Vanessa had approached him months earlier, claiming that Eleanor was planning to sell portions of the family estate. Vanessa had proposed moving money into a temporary company before the supposed sale.
He had believed her at first.
Then the transactions became more complicated, and he realized that the documents did not support her claims.
"I tried to withdraw," he admitted. "She threatened to tell Daniel that I had designed the entire scheme."
Vanessa sprang to her feet.
"You coward!"
Daniel remained motionless.
He looked at Marcus, then at the documents, then at the woman he had married less than twenty-four hours earlier.
"Why?" he asked.
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Because I wanted security."
"You had security."
"I had your promises. Your sister had everything else."
Eleanor watched her carefully.
"You could have asked me about the trust."
"And let you laugh at me?"
"I have never laughed at anyone for asking an honest question."
Vanessa scoffed.
"You wouldn't understand. You were born into this family. You never had to fight for anything."
The room fell quiet.
Eleanor slowly stood.
"That is what you believe?"
"Yes."
"Then you know nothing about me."
She walked toward the window.
When Eleanor was twenty-four, her parents had died in a winter highway accident. Daniel had been seventeen. Their father had left behind a struggling company, mounting debts, and a family divided over what should happen next.
Eleanor had abandoned her plans to study architecture. She worked alongside the company's employees, learned its accounts, negotiated with creditors, and spent years rebuilding what remained.
She had slept in the office during the worst months.
She had sold her own apartment to keep the company from defaulting.
And when the business finally recovered, she had created a trust to protect Daniel's future.
The fortune Vanessa envied had not appeared by magic.
It had been built through years of difficult choices.
"I did not inherit a perfect life," Eleanor said. "I inherited responsibilities. There is a difference."
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel finally spoke.
"Did you marry me because you loved me?"
For a moment, Vanessa appeared genuinely wounded.
"Of course I did."
"Then why were you planning to move money before the wedding?"
"Because I was afraid your sister would never accept me!"
"That doesn't answer the question."
Vanessa's voice rose.
"I wanted to make sure I would never be powerless again!"
Eleanor turned.
"And you decided the solution was to make everyone else powerless?"
Vanessa said nothing.
Martin collected the documents.
"The evidence will be provided to the independent investigators. No conclusions will be drawn until the review is complete."
Marcus agreed to cooperate. He would have to answer for his own actions, but he had finally stopped protecting Vanessa.
As he left the library, he paused beside Daniel.
"I'm sorry."
Daniel did not respond.
Vanessa waited until the door closed before approaching her husband.
"Daniel, please. I made mistakes, but we can fix this."
He looked at her.
"Did you throw that cake because you were angry with Eleanor, or because you believed she was standing between you and the money?"
Vanessa opened her mouth.
No answer came.
Daniel removed his wedding ring and placed it on the table.
"I'm going to stay somewhere else while I decide what happens next."
Her face crumpled.
"You can't leave me."
"I don't know what I can do anymore."
He walked out.
Vanessa sank into a chair.
Eleanor remained by the window, watching the rain begin to fall over the estate.
She had expected greed.
She had expected lies.
What she had not expected was the look on her brother's face when he realized that the person he trusted most might have been using his love as a means to an end.
May you like
And she knew that the hardest part of the ordeal was still ahead.
Because the investigation had uncovered only the first layer of the scheme.
