Chapter 6 - THE FATHER'S LEGACY

Tears welled in Norah’s eyes as she smoothed out the handwritten letter from her father.
Dominic and Evelyn stood respectfully near the vault doorway, keeping watch over the corridor while allowing Norah her private moment.
Norah began to read her father's final words aloud in a soft, trembling whisper:
"My dearest Norah,
If you are reading this letter, it means my time has finally run out, and Dominic has found you. I pray with all my heart that you never had to open this vault, but if you have, then the shadows of my past have caught up to us.
For twenty years, I tried to build a simple, honest life for you. I wanted you to grow up far away from the blood, lies, and corruption of the Vanguard Syndicate. But I knew that true peace cannot exist as long as Victor Vance remains in power.
Inside this server lies every contract, every payoff, and every murder order Victor Vance has issued over the last thirty years. It is the ultimate truth. But more than that, Norah, it contains the financial authority to dismantle the Syndicate forever and return billions of stolen dollars to innocent victims across the globe.
I gave Dominic the marker because I knew he was the only man strong enough to stand between you and the storm. Trust him, Norah. He is a good man.
Live your life with joy, my sweet girl. Do not let hate consume you. Be free.
All my love forever, Dad."
Norah pressed the letter against her chest, a single tear spilling over her eyelashes and tracing a path down her cheek.
Dominic stepped into the vault softly, placing a large, comforting hand on her shoulder. "He loved you more than anything in this world, Norah."
"I know," Norah wiped her cheek, looking up at him with a quiet, fierce determination. "Let's finish this."
Evelyn walked over to the mainframe server, plugging a high-speed encrypted transfer drive into the fiber-optic terminal.
"The download will take roughly seven minutes," Evelyn said, watching digital progress bars light up in neon green across the monitor screen. "Once the files are fully mirrored on this drive, I can broadcast the data simultaneously to Interpol, the Department of Justice, and international news outlets."
"And Victor?" Norah asked, turning to Dominic. "What will he do when he realizes the files are public?"
"He will try to flee the country," Dominic replied coldly. "His private jet is currently parked at a private hangar at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. He knows the net is closing around him."
Suddenly, the lights inside the subterranean corridor flickered violently and died, plunging the vault into pitch darkness.
CLACK!
Emergency backup lights flashed on, casting a dim red glare over the concrete walls.
Over the vault’s external intercom, a loud, static-laced voice echoed through the hallway:
"Security protocol lockdown engaged," an automated voice announced. "Sub-basement doors sealed."
Dominic drew his weapon instantly, stepping in front of Norah and pushing her behind the steel pedestal. "Evelyn, how long on that download?!"
"Four minutes!" Evelyn shouted, her fingers flying across the glowing keyboard. "Someone just breached the main bank security grid from the upper floor!"
Heavy footsteps echoed down the long concrete corridor outside the vault.
Standing in the red glare at the end of the hallway was Victor Vance, accompanied by eight elite mercenaries armed with heavy assault shotguns. Victor wore an expensive wool overcoat, holding a detonator switch in his gloved hand.
"Did you really think Arthur’s old bank codes would hide you from me, Dominic?" Victor’s voice boomed through the corridor. "I bought the bank's security firm three years ago!"

Victor stepped up to the open vault door, looking inside with a triumphant, twisted smile.
"Give me the transfer drive, Dominic," Victor demanded, raising the detonator. "Or I blow the main structural columns of this sub-basement and bury all four of you under fifty feet of Manhattan concrete."
