Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Winter settled over Illinois with heavy snowfalls that blanketed the suburbs in pristine, glittering white.
Life without Eric wasn't easy at first. The financial recovery was a slow, grueling battle. Attorney Jenkins and the federal investigators managed to claw back about forty percent of the stolen funds from the offshore accounts, but the rest was lost in the labyrinth of cryptocurrency transactions.
I took on extra hours at the physical therapy clinic, and Sarah helped me set up a budget that kept us afloat. We sold the house on Maple Ridge Lane—the memories there were too heavy, too tainted by betrayal—and used the remaining equity to purchase a charming, sunlit two-bedroom townhouse near the center of Oak Creek, just three blocks from Lily’s elementary school and five minutes from Sarah’s house.
On a bright Saturday morning in December, Lily and I stood in the living room of our new home surrounded by cardboard boxes.
“Mom, where should I put my snow globe collection?” Lily asked, holding the glass sphere with both hands.
“Right on the windowsill in your bedroom, sweetie, where the morning sun can hit it,” I smiled, wiping a smudge of dust off my hands.
She beamed, running up the stairs with light, joyful steps that sounded nothing like the fragile child who had been carried out of a hospital room a few months earlier.
I walked over to the large front window of our new townhouse. Outside, families were walking along the shoveled sidewalk, laughing in the cold winter air. A UPS driver delivered a package to our porch, ringing the doorbell twice with a friendly wave before heading back to his truck.
I walked over, unlocked the front door, and pulled it open.
There was no rain. There was no freezing wind. There was just a bright, clear winter sky and a fresh package sitting on the welcome mat.

I picked up the box, stepped back inside, and locked the door behind me with a smooth, effortless turn of the deadbolt. Not out of fear, but out of peace.
We were safe. We were whole. And our foundation was built on truth, strength, and an unbreakable love that no storm could ever wash away.
