Chapter 10 - The Trap Snaps Shut

The revelation hit me like a physical blow.
Every romantic memory of our early courtship, every bouquet of flowers Ryan had brought to my college dorm, every sweet promise he had whispered under the moonlight—it was all a tactical play. He had targeted me like an operative stalking a mark. I hadn't just fallen in love with a monster; I had fallen into an ambush that had lasted six agonizing years.
"Who hired him, Marcus?" Dad demanded, his voice dropping into a register of deadly calm that made the hairs on my arms stand up. "Give me the name."
"Ryan won't give it up easily," Marcus said. "He’s terrified. When the federal prosecutors brought up the name Apex Horizon during an interrogation this afternoon, Ryan had a panic attack so severe they had to transfer him to the prison infirmary. He knows whoever is behind Apex Horizon won't hesitate to silence him behind bars."
I stood up from my chair, my hands clenching into tight fists. The fear that had paralyzed me for years suddenly burned away, leaving behind a cold, crystalline resolve.
"He'll talk to me," I said.
"Claire, no," Dad said immediately, standing up beside me. "I won't let you sit in a room with that man ever again."
"He doesn't have power over me anymore, Dad," I replied, looking straight into my father's eyes. "For six years, he played God with my life. He made me think I was unlovable. He made me think my own father abandoned me. I deserve to look him in the eye and watch him break."
Two hours later, Dad and I were escorted into the high-security visitor suite at the federal detention center.
Ryan was brought in by two armed guards. He was chained at the wrists, waist, and ankles. His eyes were sunken, dark purple bruises of insomnia carved under his eyelids. When the guards pushed him into the metal chair on the other side of the shatterproof acrylic glass, his hands shook violently.
He looked at me through the glass, his lips quivering.
I picked up the telephone receiver mounted to the wall. Reluctantly, Ryan picked up his.
"Claire," he rasped, his voice sounding like dry gravel. "You have to help me. You have to tell your father to drop the federal charges. You don't understand what these people are capable of. If I stay in here, they're going to kill me."
"Who is going to kill you, Ryan?" I asked, keeping my tone perfectly flat.
"I can't say it!" he whispered frantically, his eyes darting toward the security cameras in the corners of the room. "They're listening! They have eyes everywhere! The marriage... Claire, listen to me, I loved you! At first, it was just a job, but I really loved you—"
"Shut up," I said, the words cutting through his frantic babble like a scalpel. "You hit me while I was bleeding from an ER visit. You starved me. You let your mother treat me like a dog. You don't know what love is."
Ryan pressed his face against the glass, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "If I tell you who runs Apex Horizon... will you get me into federal witness protection? Will you save my life?"
"Give me the name, Ryan," I commanded.
Ryan swallowed hard, his throat clicking. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a barely audible whisper over the receiver. "It's not an outsider, Claire. The person who paid me to marry you... the person who told me to break your spirit so you would never speak to your father again..."
Ryan paused, his breath fogging the glass.

"...it's your mother's sister. Your Aunt Evelyn."
