Chapter 3 - The Scramble

By 3:00 AM, the news had begun to leak.

In the modern corporate world, true secrets do not exist; they merely circulate in smaller, more expensive circles before breaking into the open.

In a penthouse apartment in the Back Bay district of Boston, Sloane Merritt sat on a cream-colored velvet sofa, surrounded by unpacked luggage and empty champagne bottles.

Her personal phone had been ringing incessantly for two hours.

Messages flooded her screen: texts from board members, frantic calls from her sister, and notification alerts from news outlets.

Her primary corporate email account had already been locked out. When she tried to log into her banking app to check the balance of her personal account, a stark red banner appeared across the screen: ACCOUNT RESTRICTED — CONTACT INSTITUTIONAL COMPLIANCE.

"No," Sloane whimpered, clutching the phone to her chest. "No, no, no."

The front door of her penthouse clicked open.

Sloane jumped up from the sofa, her eyes wide with desperate hope. "Evan?"

It wasn't Evan.

Two men in sharp dark suits stepped into her foyer. Behind them stood a woman wearing a tailored gray trousers suit, holding a leather briefcase and a clip-on badge that identified her as an officer of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department.

"Sloane Elizabeth Merritt?" the woman asked.

"Who are you?" Sloane demanded, backing away toward the kitchen island. "You can't be in here! This is a private residence!"

"This property is owned by Vanguard Logistics Real Estate LLC," the sheriff’s deputy stated flatly, pulling a folded legal document from her briefcase. "As of 2:15 AM, a temporary restraining order and asset freeze was issued by the Massachusetts Superior Court, granting exclusive possession of all Vanguard-held real estate to the court-appointed receiver, Beaumont Capital Management."

The two men behind the deputy immediately began walking through the apartment, carrying high-definition digital cameras and digital evidence bags.

"Hey!" Sloane shrieked, tears finally bursting from her eyes as she tried to block one of the men. "Don't touch those! Those are my bags! That’s my Chanel coat! Those were gifts!"

"Any property acquired using funds derived from Vanguard Logistics LLC is subject to immediate sequestration under the asset freeze order," the deputy said without a trace of emotion. "You have fifteen minutes to gather your personal identification, essential clothing, and prescription medications. Everything else remains on the premises."

"Evan bought this for me!" Sloane screamed, her voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that looked out over the Boston skyline. "He’s the CEO of Hawthorne! He’ll fire all of you! He’ll sue you into the ground!"

The deputy looked at her with a look of profound, cold pity.

"Mr. Whitmore resigned as Chief Executive Officer of Hawthorne Dynamics forty-five minutes ago, Miss Merritt," the deputy said quietly. "And as of twenty minutes ago, his personal assets have also been attached to the civil fraud complaint."

Sloane stopped.

The room seemed to tilt beneath her feet.

The gold dress she had worn to dinner—the dress she had carefully chosen to project power, youth, and victory over a woman she thought was just a ghost from Evan’s past—felt heavy and stiff against her skin, like a suit of lead armor dragging her down into deep water.

"He... he resigned?" she whispered.

"Please pack your bags, Miss Merritt," the deputy said, opening the front door wider. "The locks will be re-keyed at 4:00 AM."
