Chapter 7 - The Truth Vanessa Couldn't Hide

The investigation moved quickly.
Rebecca coordinated with law enforcement, provided the preserved recordings, and helped arrange formal interviews with relevant staff members. Ethan instructed his employees not to delete messages, alter records, or discuss the case publicly.
Vanessa, meanwhile, began telling her own story.
Through friends and social media, she claimed Ethan had become unstable after his wife's death. She described Maria as an unqualified nanny who had manipulated him and accused him of using his wealth to silence anyone who disagreed with him.
For a brief moment, her version gained attention.
Then the footage from the garden party was released to investigators and became the center of the case.
Several guests had witnessed the incident. Two had recorded parts of it on their phones.
Their videos matched the estate security footage.
Vanessa's claim that Maria had attacked her first began to collapse.
But the most important evidence came from an unexpected source.
The former estate administrator, Paul Grayson, contacted Rebecca through his attorney.
He wanted to cooperate.
During a recorded interview, Paul admitted that Vanessa had asked him to create a false impression that Ethan was frequently absent and emotionally incapable of caring for Lily. She had also requested access to private security recordings.
Paul claimed he initially believed Vanessa was gathering information for a legitimate family-law consultation. He became suspicious when she asked him to alter the dates on several staff reports.
“Why didn't you report it?” Rebecca asked.
Paul looked down.
“Because she told me the Whitmores would destroy my career if I crossed her. I knew how powerful they were.”
“Did you alter the reports?”
He hesitated.
“Yes.”
The admission became part of the investigation. Paul agreed to provide his records and answer further questions.
He also produced emails between Vanessa and Celeste.
One message was especially disturbing.
Lily needs to stop being the center of everything. Once Ethan and I are married, we'll have the authority to decide what's best for her.
Another read:
Make sure Maria is gone before the wedding. She knows too much.
Ethan read the emails in silence.
Rebecca closed the folder.
“These messages support the concern that Vanessa was trying to remove people who might challenge her treatment of Lily. The authorities will determine what legal consequences follow.”
Ethan nodded.
“What about Celeste?”
“She says Vanessa promised her money to help arrange the transfer. We have not established every detail yet, but investigators are following the evidence.”
That evening, Ethan sat beside Lily's bed.
The little girl was beginning to sleep more peacefully, although she still woke when she heard raised voices elsewhere in the house.
He read her a story about a rabbit who lost his way in the forest but eventually found his family.
When he finished, Lily touched his cheek.
“Daddy sad?”
Ethan smiled through the ache in his chest.
“A little, sweetheart.”
She offered him the red ball.
It was her way of sharing something precious.
Ethan kissed her forehead.
“Thank you.”
For the first time in days, he felt hope.
Then Rebecca called.
“Vanessa's attorney has contacted us,” she said. “She wants to meet tomorrow. She claims she has information about Lily's late mother.”
Ethan's smile vanished.
“What information?”
“She's refusing to say until you're in the room.”
Ethan looked at the photograph of Olivia on his bedside table.

Whatever Vanessa was planning, he knew one thing.
He would not let her use his wife's memory to hurt their daughter again.
