Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO BOUGHT EVERYONE’S SILENCE

Vincent Moretti arrived at Emma’s apartment the following morning without an entourage.

He came with one driver and Isabella, who insisted on accompanying him despite the cold weather.

Daniel nearly dropped his coffee when he saw her.

“Mrs. Moretti.”

Isabella studied his face for a long moment.

“Daniel Carter.”

She remembered him.

Emma watched their expressions carefully.

“You knew each other?”

Isabella nodded.

“Your father helped establish our family’s first community rehabilitation program. He was a good man, and he tried to warn us that something was wrong with the company maintaining our vehicles.”

Daniel looked down.

“I should have done more.”

“You did what you could,” Isabella replied. “The people responsible made sure nobody listened.”

Vincent remained silent until everyone was seated.

“My father’s accident was never fully explained,” he said. “I was twenty when he died. I spent years believing the official report.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“Last night, my legal team found the original maintenance request Daniel filed before the crash.”

Emma stared at him.

“How?”

“Because the company that owned the vehicle recently came under investigation for unrelated financial misconduct. Its archives were transferred to a legal custodian. We found the document among thousands of records.”

Daniel’s hands trembled as Vincent slid the paper across the table.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Martin Vale.

Vehicle approved for continued operation. Maintenance concerns considered noncritical.

Beneath the signature was a handwritten note.

Do not delay the Moretti trip.

Daniel looked devastated.

“I told them.”

“Yes,” Vincent said. “You did.”

For a long moment, Vincent seemed unable to speak.

Then he closed the folder.

“My father and sister may have died because someone chose profit over safety.”

“And someone covered it up,” Emma added.

Vincent met her gaze.

“Which is why I want the truth.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Vale is more powerful than he was back then. He sits on corporate boards. He funds political campaigns. He knows people who can make problems disappear.”

“Not this one,” Vincent said.

“You can’t promise that.”

“No. But I can promise he won’t intimidate your daughter into silence.”

Emma looked at Vincent.

“I don’t want special treatment.”

“You won’t receive any.”

“I want my father protected, and I want the truth established through evidence. Not rumors. Not threats. Not a billionaire making accusations because he’s angry.”

Vincent’s expression changed.

Then he nodded.

“Agreed.”

That afternoon, Vincent’s attorneys began preserving records and contacting the investigators who had handled the original crash. Daniel gave a formal statement, and Emma helped him organize his notes.

For the first time, he felt someone was listening.

But Martin Vale was already moving.

At a private club downtown, Vale met Victoria Langford and two executives connected to the old transportation company.

“You told me the Carter family was irrelevant,” Victoria said.

“They were irrelevant.”

“Then why is Moretti’s legal team digging through nineteen-year-old records?”

Vale sipped his coffee.

“Because Vincent has developed a sentimental attachment to a waitress.”

Victoria leaned forward.

“Make her disappear from his life.”

Vale smiled faintly.

“That is already being arranged.”

The next day, Emma arrived at the foundation to find several employees whispering near reception.

A news website had published an anonymous article accusing her of deliberately provoking Victoria at the gala to gain access to Vincent Moretti.

The headline was cruel.

WAITRESS STAGES HEROIC RESCUE TO LAND BILLIONAIRE’S ATTENTION.

Within hours, the story spread across social media.

People called Emma a gold digger, a liar, and an opportunist. Someone posted her apartment building’s address. Another account shared photographs of Daniel leaving the hospital.

Emma stared at the screen in disbelief.

She had spent years working quietly, helping her father and sister, never expecting public attention.

Now strangers were discussing her family as if they belonged to them.

Rachel found her in the office.

“You can take the afternoon off.”

“No.”

“Emma, this is getting ugly.”

“If I leave now, they’ll say I’m hiding something.”

Rachel sat beside her.

“You don’t owe the internet a performance.”

“I know. But I owe my father the chance to finish what he started.”

That evening, Vincent invited Emma and Daniel to a secure office at his hotel.

His legal team had identified the source of the article.

The publication had received payments through a marketing firm connected to Victoria’s family.

“Victoria wants to destroy your credibility before the investigation gains momentum,” Vincent explained.

Emma folded her arms.

“Then let her try.”

Vincent studied her.

“You understand that this could become much bigger than the gala?”

“My father has lived with this for nineteen years. I’m not going to abandon him because wealthy people are uncomfortable.”

For a moment, Vincent said nothing.

Then he smiled.

It was the first genuine smile Emma had seen from him.

“My mother was right about you.”

“What did she say?”

“That you remind her of someone who once stood up to an entire room full of cowards.”

Emma looked away, embarrassed.

Before Vincent could say more, his security director entered with an urgent message.

“Sir, there’s been an incident at the hospital.”

Daniel’s rehabilitation appointment had been canceled.

His medical records had mysteriously disappeared from the hospital’s electronic system, and someone had attempted to change his emergency contact information.

Emma felt the blood drain from her face.

“Who would do that?”

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“Someone who knows your father is the key to reopening this case.”

He turned to his security director.

“Get a team to the hospital. Now.”

Then his phone rang.

The caller’s identity appeared on the screen.

Martin Vale.

Vincent answered on speaker.

Vale’s voice was smooth and almost friendly.

“I understand you’ve been asking questions about an unfortunate accident.”

Vincent said nothing.

“I would advise you to remember that some wounds never heal. Digging into them only hurts the people still alive.”

“You threatened my family.”

“I’m trying to prevent a tragedy.”

Vincent’s eyes turned cold.

“No, Martin. You’re trying to prevent the truth.”

Vale chuckled.

“Then perhaps you should ask Daniel Carter what really happened to his wife.”

The call ended.

Emma stared at her father’s name on the hospital report.

Daniel’s face had gone completely white.

“Dad?” she whispered.

He shook his head.

May you like

“Emma, there’s something else you need to know.”

And the look in his eyes told her that the worst secret had not yet been revealed.
